Audio Restoration

A few years ago my dad converted a bunch of reel to reel's of his old country rock cover band over to .wav

I'm thinking about maybe getting someone to restore the audio over these tracks for xmas so he can enjoy the music a little more. Now, I know a little about restoration.. I know that nothing can ever be RESTORED 100 percent, but that things can only be made better. Like for plugins that draw EQ curves based off of hiss and hum, then give you control over the volume.. you still have to settle for some hiss and hum or else you lose the clarity and some bass... so yeah, I do understand that these can't be fixed a whole hell of a lot... but my question is is it even worth it to send these in and be restored?

Can these tracks even be worked with enough to make the money spent worth it? I mean, I'm assuming they are going to remove hiss and hum... make some of it shine since its really dull, then limit it and bring up the volume... but is this even worth it with the quality I'm working with here? I just figured I'd ask you folk what you think before I go spending money only to find out they couldn't do really anything.

Thanks

Is there a better Subforum to post in for this specific subject?

I listened to your example and I don't see the problem with it. What is it exactly that you are trying to do with them? I wouldn't try to remove hiss, as you will inevitably be left with artifacts. Sounds like it's from the 50s or 60s, I would just leave it as it is, personally.

Run it through an eq and a nice preamp, and you will get the other results you are looking for.

Tape hiss on an old recording, to me, is like a baby picture of a kid with spagetti on his head. Maybe not the best representation of the person, but charming and returns you to a special time. You wouldn't want to photoshop the spagetti out of the picture, would you?

I guess I can see what you're getting at. And my intention was to never ruin the classic image, he'd still have the originals. But maybe it'd be best to ask him what his opinions are.. If he's even interested in a restoration.. Maybe he's got the same idea as you. I'll find out lol.
