Is there a difference between a speaker and an amp?

Is this a joke?

There are noobie questions and then there is this.

I actually think he means is there a difference between a "normal" speaker and one used in a guitar cab?

Could be wrong, though.

"Normal" speakers include things like home hi-fi speakers. PA speakers, studio monitors and all come in unpowered and often powered (built-in amplifier(s)) versions. Any can reproduce the basic sound of a guitar, but some will do a much better job of it. With a un-powered PA or "hi-fi" speaker you will, of course, need a power amplifier, and that will need a high impedance guitar pick-up input, or will need to be used with a pre-amp which has such an input.

A typical small guitar cabinet has all the right stuff already matched and installed. Two-piece guitar cabs house the amplifier in a separate box that usually sits on top of the unpowered speaker array.

Note: The dumb links and pop-ups placed in the above text are not by the author (me) and are automatically placed they by Gearslutz!

The answer is yes, you can (if you have a guitar preamp since the speaker and the amp powering it will most likely be designed for line level inputs).

Though this question is like asking if you can use a sports car for offroading. While possible, it would be better to use something designed for the task.

OK... if you get something to bring your guitar signal to line-level, you can feed it to a powered speaker, or to your separate hifi amp and speakers. But be careful: many home audio speakers aren't designed to put out nearly the levels you probably want for your guitar, and it can be pretty easy to fry the voice coils on home speakers with the sustained notes from your guitar.
