3 mics, but only 2 inputs. Can I route mic to line input?

Hello everybody. I hope someone out there can help me with this issue: (thanks!)
I want to record a death metal drummer. I want to use three mics. One on the snare, one on the kick and one overhead.
Problem is, my interface (Edirol UA 101) only has two mic inputs.
However, I do have a handful of LINE inputs to spare.
Can I somehow rout the third mic to a line input???
I dont have a lot of money, so extra gear like a pre amp is no option'...:(
And If I record with 2 mic inputs and 1 line input, will I encounter problems with latancy of phase shifting?
Thanks everybody for thinking with me on this one

No, you can't plug a mic into a line input an get any sort of reasonable level or sound quality (try it and you will see).

But you can add an external, one-channel mic preamplifier and run that into one of your six line inputs. And it doesn't have to be expensive.

Probably not enough gain on the line inputs. You'd need an XLR to balanced phono cable to even try it which would probably cost as much as a really cheap single channel mic pre anyway. Cheap mic pres can be had for less than $50:

Thanks for your answers guys. I just realized I have a cheap Behringer 4-channel mixer lying around. Can I use that to transform the mic level to line output level???

Yeah that should work.

Plug the mic into the Behringer mixer, and then take a phono/jack lead (depending what the line-in connection is on the interface) and run that into your line-in

Thanks man. I tried it and it works. With the mixer to line connection I can even do the overhead mic in stereo now, as opposed to the mono mic input. I'm happy

Yep, tha mixer would work. Though I have gotten away with running dynamic mics into line inputs before using an xlr to 1/4" cable. Close miced drums are very, very high spl.

Watch your phase on the stereo overheads.
