Rode NT-2000

HI

Does anyone know if the Rode NT-2000 large diaphragm microphone produces a quieter output level than that of the Rode NT-1A? I was comparing the two side by side using vocals, and after ensuring that the NT-2000's Pattern, pad and HPF switches where set for maximum output, I found that I had to push up the gain on my external preamp (Aphex 207D) a few more notches, and sing a little bit closer to get its output level similar to the NT1-A.

Once I did this however it sounded very clear and obviously better than the NT1-A. I was wondering also if the NT1-A seemed louder as it produced a more pronounced higher end which seemed quite harsh in comparison to the NT-2000.

Look forward to your comments.

Regards

R

Yes, it does.

Specs copied from the Rode site:

NT-2000 Sensitivity:

-36.0dB re 1 Volt/Pascal (16.00mV @ 94 dB SPL) +/- 2 dB @ 1kHz

NT-1A Sensitivity:

-31.9dB re 1 Volt/Pascal (25.00mV @ 94 dB SPL) +/- 2 dB @ 1kHz

Thanks for your reply, but could you elaborate on the specs from Rode, do they confirm that the NT-2000 will output less volume than the NT1-A?

Thanks again

Hi Sorry. I got it, I looked up how microphone sensitivity was tested and made some sense of the specs from Rode. This means I will drive my preamp harder to add more gain to the mic to record a decent level. Does anyone know if this could be problematic in some recording situations?

It shouldn't be a problem, as long as you have enough gain available in your preamp and it's not noisy when you turn it up. But the level difference is nothing major between the two microphones, especially compared to a usual dynamic or - heaven forbid - a ribbon.

Thanks, yes the difference in level was 12 0'Clock on preamp for NT1-A and 2 - 3 0' clock for NT-2000. does that sound excessive?

No, that about reflects the difference in sensitivity written in the specs. If it still sounds clear and you like the sound, it's great.

The NT-2(000) has a bigger diaphragm. But that doesn't mean it would suit your voice average better than the NT-1. They are both great mics
