Building First Setup

I've been delaying building a recording set up for a while due to costs and lack of time, but I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge. I have a quad core Macbook Pro with Logic Pro, but thats about it.

I was hoping to get a good interface and a solid microphone to do some recordings at home and in the dorm when I head back to school. I want to cut costs without cutting quality. I'm really interested in the Apogee Duet, but I'm not sure if I should go for the first edition Duet (Firewire version) or the Duet 2. I can get a used Duet 1 for $300 firm, whereas I can get a new Duet 2 for just about $500. My question is, would the Duet 2 be worth shelling out an extra $200?

Any other advice you have for equipment required for doing good vocals and guitar (both electric and acoustic) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
