Has anyone ever made/mixed drums this good?

Clipse - Footsteps ft. Kobe (Produced By DJ Khalil) - YouTube "Footsteps" by Clipse (Prod. by Khalil)

I would love to hear an explanation as to how you would go about getting drums this upfront and thumping while still preserving the headroom to be able to add in all the other elements and vocals. Khalil is crazy...

It sounds like those "drums" have been clipped, clipped, and clipped again. No headroom at all.

Given the right source, this wouldn't be a particularly difficult quality to achieve.

Yeah there is hardly any headroom left on those drums esp. the kick

and notice how everything else is pushed back in the mix, all drums and vox

wouldn't be too hard to get this sound with the right drummer/samples

Right, it starts with the samples, of course. But they've been pushed really hard into distortion and that's why it sounds so hot and harsh.

Very close mik-ing, very small room, everything gated/compressed/limited/clipped.
OR these are overproduced samples.

Simple, turn everything else down except the drums and bass. Very bad mixing, very bad sound.
