Mixing Guitars with Reverb/Delay

A lot of times; musicians will want to play with their reverb/delay pedals on instead of adding them later ITB. Are there any important things to consider when mixing these guitar parts? I'm sure all the compression, EQ, saturation plugs, etc will affect the reverb/delayed signals as well, right?

What about recording guitars at home in a untreated room. Should I cover my amp and mic with a bed sheet or something to take away the room sound?

If the delay is part of the performance (think The Edge from U2), then you'll definitely want to keep that as close and in control by the guitar as possible so you get a good performance out of him/her.

Reverb, depends on the amp. Again if it's part of the tone/playing that makes it uniquely the guitar player/playing you should try to capture it as close to the source as possible. It will have an impact on what kind of post processing you can do though.

I usually do both: close mic with a 57 but also DI before the pedals so that I have a clean untouched signal into a clean preamp so that I have options later like amp sim plugins and reamping or just to blend with the miced source.

Absolutely if the effect is part of the performance keep it in there. Otherwise I always prefer to get it as dry as possible. Make sure the wet/dry mix is right, otherwise it will be too much or not enough.
