Can someone please recommend a pair of headphones for recording / mixing?

Sennheiser HD280 PROS best headphones ever. For a hundred bucks check the out on newegg. Nice highs creamy mids and a flat boomy bass. Also a good headphone amp would do wonders.

I own several pair of Sennheiser's and while I love them all, the 280's are not good for mixing. They are good for tracking and isolation. Now the HD600's and 650's would do the job, but they are pricey. I did pick up a set of the new KRK's and they work quite well and mixes on them translate well to other systems. But like any monitoring system, you have to learn how mixes done on them sound on other systems.

^ yes! the 701's sound amazing!...but i had to return mine because they put me in a neck brace!
i use the Sony mdr-7506 and they are pretty good for the price...(shit compared to the AKG's, though)
(i track a lot of (acoustic) guitar so i like something light and comfortable for long sessions...)

All my experience has been with the sennheiser HD 280 pro, which have served me well many years for a measly 100 bucks but are probably not audiophile. Heard nice things about Ultrasone and higher end Shures, but you're likely getting into the 300 to 500 range; is that realistic for you? There's lots of things 500 bucks can get a budding artist might crave more desperately than headphones. Maybe a gift certificate for mercenary audio/sound pure/ vintage audio king/fill-in-blank? Just sayin. :-)

I stand by the Beyerdynamic DT770's. Absolutely LOVE these headphones. Comfortable, long lasting, pleasant to the ears, and you get near accurate sub mixes when working through them. I think they've recently upgraded to a new version. If I had to, I'd buy these headphones again in a heart beat.

+1 on the athm50 very accurate but with enough thump they make listening to music at home very enjoyable.

One more vote for ATH-M50.
I love the distance they have. They're not right up in your ear, so there isn't too much bass response.
And they're comfy (which is more than you can say for a lot of cans).
Also they're cheap as chips, so if you buy them and decide you don't like them (which shouldn't be the case) then you haven't burnt a hole in your pocket and can still afford something else.

I was asking the same question "what's the best set of monitoring cans?" a few months ago and after a fair bit of online research and word of mouth I chose these due to their flat(ish) frequency response.

They retail at around AU$230 but I scored a pair for AU$130 on eBay.

All this aside i'd maybe wait a bit until you're certain what you want and what you want them FOR.

Grado Prestige SR125, $120, flat frequency response, made in New York, not the most robust build quality, but amazing customer support for any replacement parts, which i have never seen with such inexpensive headphones.
