I want to be able to play the synth without my computer/DAW open.

However, it won't let me.

Obviously there is a way to do this, I'm just clueless as to how.

are you sure you have a synth and not a controller keyboard. ?

synths have their own audio engine. controllers don't.

if you have a synth engine, you should have a function called enable local control.
on synths with synth sound engines built in, this speaks directly to the sound engine.

The only way I see is to connect the keyboard directly to the synth. I'm sure you're looking for a way to set it up once, and not have to change between the DAW controlling the synth and the keyboard controlling it. But I don't see a way to do that with the equipment you have listed. However, maybe someone more familiar with MIDI than me has a better answer.

How about getting one MIDI through (split) and one MIDI merge box.

With this you should be able to split the output from you keyboard to both interface and synth.

Then put the midi merge box before the synth, taking both the connection from your interface out and directly from your keyboard.

ya that's the pb, i know there is a way to set it up so it works without PC, but then it won't work within the DAW and I just cba having to do the cables every time i wanna play with PC(DAW) off.. ><

naaa man it's some high tech analog vintage synth i have here, says akai MPK 49 on it, great sounds!!! haha

i've got a code 8 (or well omega8), is just the problem with me having to constantly change midi setup to be able to play without PC (DAW) turned on ><

I kinda get what you're saying, but I'm very newbie when it comes to connecting stuff together and MIDI setups in general, could you provide links for the said stuff, and be a bit more descriptive how the setup would go?

sorry I don't know the units intimately.

UFX 1 says it can function stand alone. so if it can be programmed to route midi and audio and a program saved internally for stand alone use, then you should be able to do it without any extra kit. one program for using your DAw one for standalone.

So far I wasn't able to do this, unless I change the MIDI setup, but when doing that it doesn't work in the DAW anymore for some reason..

Can anyone tell me what is the optimal MIDI setup for midi keyboard > synth > interface? How do I setup FireFace in order to make it work?

Perhaps my best bet is just e-mailing RME?

I'd email them anyhow. well to be honest, I just ring companies up and ask if they can quickly talk me through the proceedure in order for me to do X.

it's far quicker.

thing you need to know is if the midi routing of the UFX can be saved in a program for standalone use, along with the Audio routing.

if you can do that, that's great. it's just a matter of finding out how.

btw, this kind of issue is a pain in the a##.

the way I get round it is I got hold of an old Motu MTP AV serial midi interface. I can save programs of midi routings in different patches. so I use it as a router and stand alone midi filter etc.

so you can handle midi with these.. some people like Edirol UM880 because you just have simple buttons on the front for the routing. so these units are worth keeping in mind. you can also get a USB Motu MTP AV and the Edirol is USB.

if your UFX can remember both midi and the Audio routing in the program then that's what you want to set up and store in the unit.

I can't help you with how because I don't know the systems.
as I say though, simplest and quickest would be to phone RME.
