First HW piece, compression question

Hello,

Im thrilled to say, I am about to have my first outboard piece.

It will be Universal Audio LA-610 MKII.

I worked ITB for about 5 years, and decided to start working with HW.

Ive got Mbox 3,Neumann TLM 102, and decided to go with the LA-610 MKII.

As much as I am thrilled to start learning it, I want to use it to maximum possible effect.

So, my question is - could it work, that Id make my stereo tracks dual mono, and use that compressor to compress both channels separately ?
Would it be of any use ?

Thank you!

It would definitely work if you had two of them! I guess that is not the answer you were looking for.

I suppose you could split a stereo track into two mono tracks and then compress each individually. But I think since there could be latency differences from one take to the next the stereo track would not line back up perfectly. That is not to say it won't work. I just think it is highly unlikely.

One thing to try is using it in parallel. For instance, take a drum mix in stereo route it to the master. Then on a send send some of both channels to an external output that is connected to your 610. Then mix the output of the 610 (in mono) with the stereo drum mix. This can help sort of 'gel' the kit together. This can also work on background vocals, guitar stacks.

Thank you very much ! Could you please just elaborate a little on the marked part ?

Sure I will try. I am not a DSP guru or anything but I have been messing with this stuff for a couple decades.

For sound to go out of your computer and back in takes a digital to analog converter. The reverse direction takes an analog to digital converter.
Both trips take a small amount of time due to processing. This time is called latency. A good system should be at the most 10ms each way. This would equate to a total of 20ms in your case of running it through the compressor. Latency can be adjusted within the settings of your audio interface. However the lower you go the more it taxes your system so you play a balancing act.

Now your system should have a certain latency and it should stick to that from one recording to the next (as long as you don't adjust it in between of course) . So in theory splitting a stereo file into two mono and then running both at seperate times back into new tracks should result in indentical recordings. However my gut tells me that due to the importance of timing issues in stereo recordings they won't be perfect.

Of course this is all theory. Give it a shot. If it does work, great. If it doesn't now you at least have some idea why.

I dont see latency as a problem as much Phase and imaging! A stero compressor keys off of both (sometimes one ) channel and applies the same compression to both channels! you could end up with some weird stuff using a mono in 2 passes!
Just budget a bit more and pick up a used RNC for stereo duties!
