500 series EQ

Gentlemen,

I've put together a nice 500 series format EQ that some of you may be interested in.
It's a 3 band number, with sweepable hi shelf, sweepable mid with switchable q, and sweepable shelf/peak lo band. It also has continuously variable hi pass and lo pass filters.
Transformer in and out. Fully discrete audio path, with dual discrete op amps.
ICs are used for the simulated inductors.

Front panel will be nicely screened and Sifam knobs will be used.

I'm not sure at what price point I'll be offering them, but once I have costing for all fabrication I'll be a little wiser.

If there is a SW London gearslut who would like to try a prototype in their rack, PM me and we'll arrange something.

Any and all comments welcome.

I say you can't have TOO many 500 series choices, and i just bought another API rack!

I've been building lots of stuff for myself and friends for a good few years and decided to build myself a nice 16 channel mixing desk. I settled on the 500 series format for several reasons and thought it an idea to offer the eqs as a means to fund the build.
I'm really just testing the water as I've yet to make a commercial product, but thought that it may be something useful to many here.

Well done, it looks might fine indeed, so when you are not toying with Neve bits and bobs you are trade sides with the API team ;-) I wish you all the best for/with this project, I think this is the first of many more 500 series bits we will see.... The tranos look like OEP's and 990 footprint DOA's, should make for interesting listening!

Good to see these come out. . I recognise these knobs.

Just to say, mr Purspose racked up & wired some ex bbc / alice channels for me a while back, and they came back much better than i had asked - all i had asked for was a rudimentary psu & wiring but i got a great solid rack with a custom output buffer and a great sound.

Cant find many people like that in london.

Peter,

One suggestion from a co-500 series module manufacturer is get that edge connector done double sided and use both sides for the contact onto the edge connector. IMO this increases the reliability and makes for a lower DC resistance contact, especially on the GROUND contact.

16 channels of as good as I can make it. Transformers everywhere and a 'LOT' of work ahead.

Believe me, make a few and send em' out.

If it sounds good and is reasonably priced (ie. think Speck) you'll get A LOT of interest.

I think you should consider that you're not a known entity.

When folk get excited about a new Buzz module or a Shadow Hills module, it's because there's already a murmur in the crowd about the stuff.

When I was a kid I was really into Jason and the Scorchers. They used to pack 'em in at the club near my house. I asked Perry, the guitar player, how they got so many people at their shows. He said "the first thirty times we came through, there were five people."

Hi Temas,

The first post has more info, but things have changed a little from then.
It is now transformerless on the input (those I tried out weren't cutting it) and has a custom Sowter output transformer.
The frequencies are continuously variable on all bands... as are the high and low frequency 12dB/oct filters.

I'll get a page online with a full list of specifications as soon as I get the chance.

Apologies for the delay in responding.

Please bear in mind that I'm a one man band, I can't afford to buy in bulk (which pushes up my costs), there is a lot of component matching and everything is hand made with care and lurve!

So that said.....
Street price £450.00 UKP and a special Gearslut offer of £395.00 UKP on the first 10.

Available end of April.

I think my writing about how something I built sounds would be pointless.
What I'll do is get the guy who's been putting it through it's paces to write a paragraph or two and I'll post them here.

I'm really hoping someone designs a modular bus and aux system which is the same width as 500 series. This is the missing link for people who want to put together their own 500 series mixers and who don't want to go the 1608 route.
