any notions of when the UAD-2 might appear?

alrighty folks,

does anybody have any kind of notion when Universal Audio might be releasing the next, ie upgraded and more powerful UAD card?

i'm still holding out on the investment but crunch time is fast approaching when i feel it will be very advantageous for me to have it's range of plugins, in terms of bang for the buck mixing power and quality.

sure, i'd love to get the outboard, but can't just quite yet.

thanks,

regards,

richie.

Thumbs down

I have mailed them, and for the moment they develop the Neve 33609 compressor/limiter emulation, after the Neve 1081, and maybe after that, they'll concentrate their efforts on building the UAD-2.

Neve 33609 emulation is planned for this fall : october/november.

The Neve stuff is totally compatible.

I wouldn't expect any Firewire powered UAD's in the future. In one of there press releases about the new PCIe cards they mention that Firewire just can't compete in the bandwidth department.

At some point they HAVE to release a faster card. The Neve 1073 take 1/4 power of the whole card. I'm thinking that the 33609 is gonna take even MORE power.

I woulda thought the move to PCI Express would have been the opportunity to do this, and they apparently didn't take that opportunity. So they may be waiting for a better chip to work with and port all their stuff over to that.

I hope they're already working on v.2, because if they start working on it after all the Neve stuff is released it will mean that we won't have that card at least until the end of 2007/early 2008.
And the old card was already seriously underpowered at least since when the Roland stuff (the space echo) came out...

it's a pity, they could have been the leader of the market in this field with a better card.

I could be wrong... but, I think that even with the existing card, they're already the leader in the market in this field because of the quality of their plugs.

I think that they are making too much money selling multiples of these old (and probably inexpensive to make) underpowered cards to making developing a new one a priority. The quality of the plugs, at least for now, has kept the market captive.

But if they hold off too long, they will bite themselves in the ass.

indeed.

i just have this nagging feeling that its going to be, or at least seem to be relatively underpowered very soon.

the powercore already has much more juice.

true, it is the UA range of plugins that im after but still, its old already and the technology must be there by now to crank out #2 with at least 4X the power of #1.

i just feel that the price is kinda high to pay right now for something that is showing its age, power-wise anyway.

the new plugs for it, the neves, of which only the 1073 has been released are using ridiculous amounts of the card... and by all accounts sounding excellent.

ah, sure what do i know?!

richie.

The card being so weak as far as its processing power goes is the whole reason I didn't buy in. I can run too many instances of great sounding plug ins natively. Now when they come out with a New card and It's blazing fast? I'm in. But if they're behind the times (power wise) when It comes out, which I feel is a distinct possibility then I'll be waiting for the UAD-3 card.. or Death. Whatever comes first.

As long as you have enough PCI/PCIe slots in your machine UAD is fine. It is inexpensive compared with the Powercore, both in terms of hardware and software, and the plugins are generally better too. I have three UAD cards and a couple of powercore MkIIs which, alongside a decent compliment of native plugins, is usually far more than I need to do a mix at 44.1 or 48KHz. OK, so there's a four card limit on UADs, but you can always get another PC and load that one up with more cards and use the plugins over FX Teleport. Its underpowered compared to the Powercore but I get a hell of a lot more use and satisfaction out of my UADs.

UAD will have to get their act together on an update some time soon as we see more DSP stuff on the market, but waiting for technology is folly - by the same token you'd never upgrade your Mac/PC because there's something better around the corner. I reckon its just best get the best stuff available at the time and get on with using it. Otherwise you are missing out now so that you don't miss out tomorrow. You can always upgrade later...
