New ribbon mic - anyone tried it yet?

I have just learned about these mics:
http://www.avantelectronics.com/CR-14.htm

and it is the first ribbon mic I have fallen in love with, at least for how it looks (which has worked for me with some love affairs in the past...)

Anyone know anything about it or used it? It is the first ribbon mic <$300 that looks good enough to try out, though not on this month's budget. Maybe next...

Love to know more about it!

Snazzy. Wonder how it looks on vocals.
Are there other ribbon mics with this sort of dual ribbon design? Interesting.

Beyer M160 has two ribbons. This thing kind of looks like an old Oktava ML-19 on a diet and wearing a red jacket.

I got two of em from their OEM people.

Since i'm renovating the shop I have only used them once for a live acoustic gig on acoustic guitar and accordian.

They work.

How they'll work in the studio is yet to be seen.

I have actually had one of these mics from Avantone for about a month or two now. It definately wins the category of Sexiest looking mic. The sound of it I have not really come to know intimately yet but it is not bad. Mine is red. I have been wondering why it has taken this mic so long to take off. It seems everyone is making Chinese ribbons these days. I have not found a stellar performance from it yet but I am still trying it on stuff.

I just spoke to the actual company that makes these mics, Alctron (the same company that makes pretty much all the cheaper mics) in Ningbo, China. I'm considering doing a group buy for these mics through my Analog Industries site. The minimum order from Alctron is 100 pieces, F.O.B. Ningbo, China. I'm still waiting to hear about shipping costs and tariffs and such, but an early estimate, assuming we could get enough people to commit to 100 units (I will take two myself, FWIW) I'm fairly certain that we could pull this off for $125 per microphone.

If there's any interest in this, head over to my Analog Industries blog site. I will post the information as I get it. These guys actually seem pretty reasonable to deal with. Obviously, if we did this it would be the silver ones in the ad pictured above, not the red ones. We wouldn't be ordering in a quantity large enough to justify a custom color.
