SPL Passeq

Word of mouth said this one should be looked closely:

With reasonable pricing and utmost performance of SPL mastering series gears.
I expect to review it soon.

That has to be one of the most unintuitive interfaces I've ever seen. I mean it looks cool, but I don't think I have the brain capacity to remember which knob does what .....

Shame, because I think SPL are severely underrated.

I felt that way at first, too much arty farty ... but have decided it's fairly easy to understand and if it sounds good will look just fine ;)

All the boost/cut is centered around the overall gain... so that's where you look first, then move out toward the freqs.

List is $4890.

Such a few recommendations of all the SPL stuff! Think they have a lot of really good equipment, haven't they?

This thing will be good, I am sure!

Love the vitalizer!

Maybe you're right Lucey - when you spend a bit longer looking at it, it starts to make more sense.

Still prefer the UI approach they used for the PQ though. That's an EQ you can just twist and go. Does anyone know how the Passive is supposed to compare to the PQ incidentally ....?

Can anyone lead me to a link that goes into the theory of this design of EQ? I've heard of people boosting and cutting the same frequency, but to what end? I've used the low boost/cut bands on a pultec in conjunction to add a type of resonant dip just above my boost frequency.

So what is the real theory behind this practice? And is this new SPL indicative of or a departure from classic designs? And what's with the different boost/cut ranges for each band, and why the choice of frequency ranges for the bands?

So many questions! Shuur is puuurty tho, innit... hur hur

Passeq will be very competetively priced, street expected 3,5-4 k in US, well after a couple of months.

This looks like a really good concept- and flexible too! Hope it sounds really good- if it does I'll have to pick one up just for the way that you could tailor your EQ curves with the boost/cut at seperate freq's.

I kind of wish that they had given the HF band an option higher than 20k and a HPF would have been nice too...

You were right after all. It's okay in use, but I also 'prefer' the standard approach.

Tone? The eq is smooootheeee.

I found the intrinsic -.5 db tilt from bottom to top to be annoying, and mastering recall to be impossible with such a wide swing on each pot. The 4U box is a little annoying as there's very little in it.

Mostly I didn't lke the tonal quality it added. Not in love.

just for 10 minutes, in their shop.
so not a real test.
yes. clean, mellow power. not constricted or muffled.
a nice layout. no problem finding things.
cut (left of the volume knob) and boost (right) are logical
cut and boost being not exact mirrors (in freq) is a smart idea
as someone (here on GS) pointed out it has the SPL sound.
which is very much OK IMHO.
