Uk made

Colin

The Sontronics mics are UK designed and of course made in China.
We demoed them for 2 weeks before taking on the line, as we were
very cynical about another "Chinese mic" line. To keep an open mind
we set them up and compared them to some Neumans,
SE Electronics, Blue. Studio Projects etc. we were suprised, we actually
liked what we were hearing overall and decided to give it a shot, It was
not by any means a clinical studio test, but they survived the typical
mic comparison test very well. the Sigma will definitely get the studio
test soon.

My new SIGMA finally arrived yesterday!

First impressions (looks):
Man, this thing is beautiful, mic & packaging. The mic and unusual-looking shockmount come housed in a really cool mini-suitcase carrying case. The case is lined in black velvet, and very pretty. The mic itself is pretty hefty for a such a small mic. Real vintage design, with a modern feel.

First impressions (sound):
This ribbon has some pretty hot output! It's active circuitry really boosts the level up so you don't have to crank your pre up to 60db. I just got my new Lawson L251 tube mic a couple days earlier and the output levels of the two mics aren't that far off. Of course, the noise level on the SIGMA is still very ribbon-like (a bit noisy). It's not bad though.

The SIGMA was running through my ME-1NV into a Rosetta 800. I sang some quick ballad-y vocals into the SIGMA just to try it out. Honestly, I have very little experience with ribbons, and my studio is vocal-only (a cappella studio). The first thing I noticed is the proximity effect...strong. It's dark, but not ridiculous. The sound is realllly smooth and velvety. It seems to take EQ really well (apparently ribbons do). I think this thing will be great on close-miced bass-vocals.

I don't have any audio to post just yet, not sure what people would want to hear. Of course, I can only post vocals since I don't record instruments (except the occasional acoustic geetar).

I need more time to get to know the SIGMA, but my first impressions are very good. This is not just another rebranded "Chinese ribbon" that we keep hearing about...seems like the real deal.
