HS Series Powered Monitors

Yamaha has released new white cone monitors (like ns10's). Anyone heard these monitors yet?

Do you have any idea how they compare to the tapcos or the alesis ones in the same price range? I am currently living in the a small city in japan (the money is good, so I will be able to buy a lot of the gear I have been waiting years for) but those three are the only ones in that range I can order here (except for the m-audios, which suck) and I will probably have to order them without hearing them first. Any advice would be aprediated.

I just got my hands on a HS80M. While I haven't done enough critical listening on them, and I haven't adjusted or sorted out the acoustics of the room, I can say that they sound clear.

On the other hand I have a feeling from the short time that the bass response is conservative (I didn't engage the filters on the monitors). Well.. at least compared to say Dynaudio BM15's which I've had some experience on, but that's not really a fair comparison since it's a totally different price range and it's a different room, different source. It might benefit from the matching sub, although I haven't heard it nor am I a fan of subs.

Visually, the HS80M is pretty big, and is probably more suited as a mid-field in home setups. I'm from Japan, so I know how small rooms can be. Just make sure to budget out enough space for placement as well as acoustic treatment.

I'll report back if I have anything else to say. Like for example, I haven't really cranked it yet, and I'm sure my opinion will settle down a bit as the I wear in the speakers.

(regarding HS80) After using it for a while, for the price, I think it's great. I think the room also has lots to do with it too, but the bass could be tighter, and overall it sounds thinner than say a dynaudio bm-15a. Therefore, it might be a little fatiguing for some, but I'm happy that I can hear everything in the mix so I don't let weird little things slip by. I've yet to really mix anything to see how well things translate, but I assume it will be decent.

Anyone compare them to the Event ASP8's? Just curious since I will probably be buying the Events this week.

I think the really interesting thing is: How are they compared to the NS-10M's?? Do they also sound like crap, and are they also 'midrange-dominant' speakers? Do they have the same 'translate-ability'? I mean, who needs another "nice" monitor?

LG

p.s.
Hi everyone! I read and appreciate this forum for over a year and finally dared to register...

They have plastic enclosures (not wood), plastic cones (not paper), they are powered and ported. The HS50M's are more harsh than regular NS10's.

I've narrowed my choices down to the Event ASP's and the new Yamaha HS80M's as well and would love to get some opinions on how the two compare.
