Ua 1176ae & 710

Wow, I finally get to post a new product before ANYONE!

Doesn't really make me feel that cool. The goods...

UA 1176AE
$3000 List / $2500 Street
http://www.uaudio.com/products/analog/1176ae/index.html

Looks like they are doing what they did with the LA-610 SE a few months back.
Looks like they are pretty damn proud of their new unit as well.

UA 710 Twin-Finity Mic Pre & DI
$1000 List / $800 Street
http://www.uaudio.com/products/analog/710/overview.html

Whatever the hell "Twin-Finity" means.

Well I'd guess due to the twin topology and the fact that you can blend seamlessly between sold state and value/tube gain stages along with having both input and output controls the possibles are endless... hence TWIN and FINITY.... Ok it is of course finite but if it sounds as good as it's looks and description it seems incredibly versatile.

I look forward to playing with one.

Cheers

Matt

Guess I should have actually READ the press release.

Yes, EVERYTHING will sound like Journey circa 1978 (I think the date is correct?)

Read the info on the 710.

It's a combo of a solid-state mic pre and a tube mic pre. According to the info, they are phase aligned, which is a pretty difficult trick to get right.

So you can change the balance from 100% solid state to 100% tube preamp to anywhere in between on the same mic. Assuming the preamps sound good, I think this is a very cool idea. I'm definitely going to have a listen in person.

I saw both units today in Amsterdam at the AES.
I did hear the pre but not the 1176.
Unfortunately the 1176 is again an aniversary unit which will not be made many off.
Just as the signature version in serial production it could have increased the high level that UA allready is.
For what the pre concerns I think TLA has also has something to add a tube to a solid state.
The outlook is a little the same like a U5 from Avalon.
They had connected it to a Mojave MA-100 small condensor.
I must say that the idea is realy good to have the opportunity to give the sound some tube carracter.
There will perhaps be a stereo unit comming also.
As far from what I could hear on a noise AES floor was quite good.
I am sure thee will be some more reviews in the next months.

Greetz,

Paul

In a certain way it is similar to the Millennium TD-1, isn't? But, cheaper...

I have no idea what the above means. Did you demo it at your studio?

What's unique (and different from the Millennium) is that instead of an Either/Or switch between tube/solid state, there is a blend knob that lets you totally vary the balance between tube/solid state. Both the tube and solid state circuits are operating all the time, and you can combine the tonality of both in whatever balance seems to work for the mic/source/taste.

No way to really know until having a listen, but it seems like a great idea in theory. The real trick is how the individual preamps sound and how well they nailed the phase alignment between them, which like I said earlier, is not necessarily easy to do in the analog domain. If they got that right, this could be a really cool addition to the arsenal.

Just by design, it almost has to be capable of a unique sound.

Nothing unique here. SPL did that with their gainstation 3 years ago. I have the 8 channel version - great pre. The most popular in our studio.

But it's not the same thing, at all. The SPL Gain Station has a solid state preamp followed by a tube preamp that can be bypassed if desired.

Very different from the 710 with a solid state preamp and a tube preamp both operating in parallel with a Blend knob to determine how much of each preamp you are hearing. A big difference in concept.

Gain Station and the 710 are not the same design topology, and I maintain that the 710 is unique. Did you read the 710 description before posting?

Also in the press release from universal audio, UAD1's have had their price cut. I wouldn't want to speculate as to why..
