| 3000 will reign forever.... it balanced the simplicity and ease of use with features.... totally expanded on the MPC60s.. but didn't cheese out and get over complicated like the 4000. there's a reason the SP1200 is a classic... people don't always need MORE FEATURES. less is more. |

| i'm glad that akai's still in the game, but i can't get too excited by an 8-track hard disk recorder with a built in virtual analog. not to say great stuff can't be made on it. it just seems that this 5000 misses the point. either make a box that really competes with computer-based daws (perhaps sacrificing the flexibility of third-party plugins for the stability of hardware) or put out something simple and fun with a cool sound and a creativity-inspiring workflow (like the early mpcs). seems this one stacks up favorably to cubase 4 on a powermac g3, but it'll have to cost more than the $2k they're charging for the mpc2500. ah well...meanwhile, roger linn and dave smith are putting out the sweet-looking linndrum ii analog for $1500 street (i think). |

| is this 5000 still 16bit 44.1 on the sampling front, like the 1000 and 2500? |

| The MPC is on it's death bed ... sorry to say it ... many of the purist luv it still and live and die by it ... The only reason I've ever considered buying it was for it's timing and it's swing ... but even that ain't worth the price of a used car (on my budget anyway)..lol MPC 5000 ... probably the equivalent of FL Studio 8 ... or Reason 5 when they come out. Nobody is looking for that 12 bit sound any longer ... that along with the timing and swing can now be captured in many of the DAWs that are out. Sorry, I guess I'm just a pessimist (former user of the MPC 2000xl). 1 |

| I've actually seen what the 5000 can do, and I'll say this much, they added all the right features. And this is coming from a die hard original 3000 user... but to each his own.

| This seems like a downgrade form the 4000. Still a nice machine but besides the new built in synth feature and adat, there's nothing you cant get from the 2500 with the JJ OS. Proffessionals dont care about the 8 track mixdown because a 15 track beat still has to get mixed down part for part in a DAW. More Q links and effects, OK, but i have all that in my DAW. yeah i get it, "but you can do it all in the box"; but if i cant record my whole 40 track song including vocals in "the Box", then everything still has to come out. I think it makes a great live machine but, it doesn't trump the 4000, they couldv'e upgraded the 4000's OS and got the same effect; AND more RAM. I own an SP1200, MPC2000 (Classic), MPC1000, and S950. And at this point, if AKAI had a software MPC that worked the exact same way as a real MPC without the memory restrictions I'd spend 5grand on that. other than that, i already own a million samplers and plugins that can do it all. They can sell a software bundle with a slimmed down hardware mpc (without all the internals) and sell that for 5g. hook it up to ur laptop, rewire it to ur DAW, let the hardware serve as a dongle to protect their product. You'll still have the hardware feel and workflow, but 4gigs of ram and 1tb disk streaming. And, a laptop and controller will be about the same size, if not smaller than the 5000. THATS THE REAL NEW MPC. Oh, But it is smaller than the 4000 and sexier though.

| But the specs don't tell what it actually does..... I just got finished reading the manual and it does more than what is being advertised. Most of the features in previous MPCs are in the current OS and also more will be added in future OS upgrades. This is stated in the manual. This MPC can even me used a multimbral sound module! ![]() |

and i'd love to believe akai's promises of future OS upgrades. but its clear from that comment you don't know the history us 4k users have been through with akai. not only did we not get things promised in future upgrades- and not only has our operating system now been discontinued- but features advertised when they first announced the product (direct from disk streaming) never even were there in the first place.

From you other comments about a half assed virtual analog synth...I can't see where the MPC 5000 is lacking. Please feel free to clarify. From your DAW to your software synths, why would you care about any MPC anyway? (based upon your comments). You can simply buy a computer. software, and a MIDI drum pad to accomplish the same thing. But then again, it will not be as fun as an MPC. | |

| It seems everyone wants the MPC to compete with current computers and IMHO they just can't do that. They wouldn't have the resources. Personally I don't think it looks to bad. ADAT is a nice addition as well as USB2 and the bigger screen. Having said that, if I were making an MPC I would make it run more like a soundcard and be powered via firewire. A little box that runs off firewire powere with about 9 pads and it stores samples and acts like an external harddrive with a sequencer but is totally interfacable with some sort of aksys software. To tell the truth seeing an MPC5000 makes me wish it was easier to get a 3000 here in OZ. Regardless I am more than happy with my 2500 and feel pretty damn lucky to live in the age we do. ![]() |
