Let imagine that average post takes 5 minutes of member's time (incl. reading thread, short contemplating, writing, posting, Internet delays etc.). 1000 posts would mean at least 90 hours of intellectual activity (and even in developing countries such hour would cost at least 100 $). Even if we discount it several times we talk about valued contribution anyway.
Now, what is valuable here dealer's or gearslutz's opinion?
Right upper angle should be place where dealers should post their message.
All other posts should be only focused to technical explanations and clarifications of functional capabilities (if asked).
Promotion and pimping on GS no matter how nicely (and even unbiased) done, with good intentions and honest targets is different type of activity than experience sharing.
GS owners should decide should we move toward commercialization and advertising or volunteer info sharing.

here are the beasts in question, in a stunning display of professional setuppery. note precarious balance, loose wires, custom plastic slipmat, and general mayhemishness.

Well here's my bass heavy, tinny, overcompressed with too much reverb version. How's that for unorthodox?!

I really like the song and the care free vibe and the tracks definitely do sound amazing.

I tried get a Wax Poetic (Tommy) style sound, with lots of lovely bass but also a really crisp snare sound. I did fail, but I still think it sounds OK.

Any feedback would be nice as I am not experienced at mixing.

Thanks for the info and especially the files UBK.

The Burl had a tighter defined low end and the 4-10K range sounds really smooth to my cloth ears.

I've always like the 2192 but would love to hear some more comparisons?

NICE! alright, i've decided to list my most favorite and least favorite things about each mix. the cool thing is that every mix gave me cues to how i would approach something differently because the treatment strikes me as particularly creative, or effective, or both. every mix was in some way inspiring.

js vega, what i liked most by far was the keyboard treatment. you took an otherwise static element and imbued it with life and motion, and it seemed to live just under the surface of the music like an alligator biding its time. very cool. what i liked least was the degree of compression, which seemed to rob the sounds of their life and dimension. in particular, the kick gets lost on the one of most measures, presumably because the bass is swallowing it.

norman, i loved your treatment of the backing/filler vocals, the uhh-uhh's. this was a part that i shied away from in my mix because they felt uninspired, but your stereoization and bold placement really gave them a spark they didn't have in any other mix. lovely! what i liked least was the synthetic, processed tone of the drums, and how everything in the song seemed to lose its tonal glue. things sound like they were separated with eq then forced together with compression, when to my ears they simply fall together better when the natural tone did all the work.

bcgood, well, on first blush i thought your mix sounded extremely similar to mine. but a moment into it i realized that you actually nailed it in a way i didn't. you made sure every single moment was dialed, every placement came and went in exactly the way it wanted. my hat is off to you, i bow to your superior kung fu. if i had to come up with something i like least, it'd be the fact that i like your mix better than mine.

well done everyone!

I didn't hear Bcgood's until just now.

Bcgood - I really like the compression on the vocal. Care to share your treatment method?

Well, I actually didn't do another mix that is UBK's mix from the second post which was an AIF. I just mastered it. I did quite a bit of subtle processing and listening between my NHT's and my Senheiser headphones to get it dialed in the way I like it. I think I dialed in about 7 different, distinct processes altogether, (Maybe more). Thanks for the kind words UBK, it's nice to hear that you liked it also thanks for the post, this is what GS is all about IMHO. I can go into more detail later if people are interested. I might divulge some details of my top secret methods...

Yeah. It's a great master of that 70's laid back vibe UBK was going for. You got the center nailed IMHO.

Are you doing any mid/side processing? What kind of compressors?

Thanks U B K

Looks like one of the best threads in a while is gone now. i'm sure Jules has his reasons, but i'm sorry it's been deleted.

UBKs disclaimer in the first post of the thread told us that he had been paid to do the experiment. should it have been in all caps or what?

so heres a recap of what we lost...
1. tracks of an interesting song, tracked through some great gear. interesting to compare the pictures of the mic placement with the raw tracks. i'm not sure i would have ever tried that without seeing those pictures.

2. a real comparison of two different converters. it was instructive, because we had the raw tracks to compare the finished mix to.

2. some GS re-mixes that took the song in different directions. i learned a lot from listening to those, and how different approaches were taken. i was looking forward to hearing where other folks might take those same tracks.

this kind of content is EXACTLY the reason i lurk on gearslutz.

so Greg, here's one guy at least that appreciated the effort.

Oh drat, I knew I should have downloaded the tracks when I had the chance this morning, had a few ideas involving mixing in some strings from some old Nick Drake tracks and so on for fun. Oh well.

I found it an interesting and informative thread despite it's obvious problems, but I appreciate the fact that this forum is moderated and kept clear of too much manufacturer bias.

UBK to me has always seemed fair in his post's. Never got the sense that he was shady. I loved the test he did. If he was upfront and honest, I feel it should not have gotten pulled.

There are enough bullshitters on here pimping gear. Go after them..

Can we get that dude Chris Crocker to make another plea..

Leave Britney, I mean UBK alone...!!!

Thanks for the time u spent UBK.

I think that a clear warning should have been sent out. I'm not sure the entire thread should have been deleted though. Unlike a lot of threads on this forum this one actually had uncompressed samples that greatly enhanced the value of the thread. I think there have been many more threads on this site that where more shady than that one. It was already clear that UBK and the maker had a deal so what's the point of deleting it after that is already out in the open?

point taken. so most of the offense seems to be that the thread was created in the high-end forum instead of the new products forum. maybe it could have just been moved there.

most of the offense comes from Wave Distribution's rep using Greg's childlike enthusiasm with any new toy (and ability to write gushing flowery reviews) to sell A/D converters..

i count UBK/greg as a naive victim in this lil fiasco...

i wonder if the picture of the jar of marijuana sent Jules over the edge on this one... WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, UBK?!??!

JESUS ****, MAN..

he's lucky Gil didnt fire him for associating a Wave Distribution sponsored media event with illegal drugs.

"Tape is a mangler.." -- Slipperman // "The idea of the perfect album is this amorphous thing we're always aiming at. For us, it can mean something full of imperfection. Part of our aim has always been to destroy the sound in a beautiful way. It doesn't mean we expect everyone would like it. I'm not sure we will ever get there... but the whole point of making music is at least to aim at your own idea of perfection." -- Boards of Canada
