I'm in trouble. I want to keep all snares in one folder instead of two folders named V1 and V2 - but then Drumagog can see only a fraction of all samples that are in the folder. What's the solution or workaround?

tek, go to Steven Slate Drums and go to upgrades.

ric, ask your question at the stevenslatedrums.com forum and someone will probably have done this configuration with the dm5 and you'll get an answer

baddo... unfortunately, Drumagog, doesn't like too many files in one folder so you'll have to keep em in V1 and V2 folders until this is fixed in an update.

NEWS:

We are in NRG Recording studios (Evanescence, No Doubt, John Fogerty, Billy Joel, Melissa Ethridge, Linkin Park, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, and so many more) recording new ROOM SAMPLES. We have an AKG C24, two M49s, a mono U67, and two Coles 4038s capturing this amazing sounding room. The result is going to be the Z5, and let me tell you folks, it sounds HUGE!!!! We're going to leave this stereo room sample UNPROCESSED so you can make use of the cool new BFD2 processors to tweak it. But it sounds good au natural as well! It'll be a great addition to the current bright and shimmery Z4.

Just ordered the Platinum Pack. Lets see or hear what the fuss is all about. I hope its money well spent. I was gonna buy me a Aimpoint scope for my AR15 (about the same price), but I like my music a little better than my guns. :)

Got my 2.0 pack about 2 weeks ago. So far I'm loving it alot. I do find myself making "custom gogs" which are a combination of a few kicks or snares...HOWEVER what I will say that is awesome is so far every single snare has the same phase, so no need to invert/edit any of the samples to combine them.

So far my favorite is a combination 7/11/17 snare I made, kick 5 and kick 1 mixed, and the whole tommy lee kit!

I'm also using strictly drumagog/wavs so I can't comment on the kontakt stuff.

Great work all around.

Very cool! Please remember to check out P.O.D.'s new album mixed by Jay Baumgardner. It uses a whole bunch of the new 2.0 samples (which he beta tested).

Steven I've been listening to the P.O.D. album with your samples and it ROCKS. It probably has some of the best rock drum sounds I've heard in years. Is there anyway you can post a list of songs and tell us which particular samples are used on it? Might be asking too much Also I was listening to a Lean Rimes song with a friend and I SWEAR I heard Snare4 and Kick9.. Do you know if her mixer used it on her last album?

I'm a big fan of a lot of Jay Baumgardners mixes. Any way you might be able to get him to be a guest moderator or set it up with Jules? I'm sure he could be a wealth of knowledge for aspiring rock mixers.

BTW I just did a little Led Zep cover band demo and we Drumagog'd the Led Zep samples and everyone is flipping over it! Love that Old Zep snare!

Also, I still can't join the forum at your site because it doesn't send me a confirmation email. Is this just me? Wow, I ask a lot of questions

Junk, Jay used a lot of different samples from song to song on the P.O.D.

I'll see if I can find out any specifics. When I was there last, he had some Snare2a on something, the Old Zep kick and snare on another... I'll try to find out more details for you. As for him becoming a guest moderator, I'm sure he'd love to but the guy is knee deep in the new Papa Roach stuff and has little to no time, but it can't hurt to ask him. He is one of THE best rock mixers for sure. Email support@stevenslatedrums.com about your forum problems.

Many of the demos on our site feature more modern rock oriented stuff (although the OldZep demo is quite cool and vintage!).

We get a lot of requests for drier, old school 70s sounds. These sounds can easily be acheived by using the Z3 dry versions of the samples and using the more retro snares... Anyway... we've been busy on the 2.1 update (adds NRG room sounds and BFD2 support and fixes some bugs) so we haven't had much time to do these demos... But leave it to wiz producer/composer/mixer Scott Reinwand to come to the rescue.. Scott was kind enough to make these quick demos for a funky 70s vibe, right out of Kontakt:

Different snares on different versions:

Steven Slate Drums is now available at Sweetwater, Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Alto Music, and more in the US/Canada, and from DBS GmbH - Cartoon, Broadcast, Audio... in Europe, and can also be purchased directly at Steven Slate Drums

all updates are directly from us, regardless of whether you get the collection directly from us or from a retailer. Good question.

Our 2.1 update is under way and will include many new features, such as the famous sounds of the NRG Studio A which will come with every cymbal and drum hit. We also will be releasing our BFD2 expansion discs.

A critical 2.01 update will be available in the next day or so, check your email and the SSD page for details.

Is this option available with the LE Version, I just ordered it from Sweetwater. Actually I couldnt find much on your web site saying just what was included as far as individual drums. I do mostly country so Im excited to see how it works but Im thinking it is going to be great. Is there a upgrade from LE to the full version

Hi Jeff, the LE version has a lot of options to make some great 70s, country, and old school kits. Again, using the Z3 versions of the samples (by using the keyswitches explained in the new manualj) and choosing some old school samples.

There is even a preset kit in the LE version called "the 70s classic kit" or something like that.

There is an upgrade from LE to Platinum, contact us for details about that.

Also, anyone who buys from a retailer please send your info to:

register@stevenslatedrums.com

New updates are already available, these will be on the UPDATES page coming soon on our webpage.

Steven even though you have a lot of the signature demos on your site, some of my favorite kits are the other non signature preset kits. Is it possible that somewhere on the site you can do little mp3s of all the other presets? I know there is 36 of them but people need to hear them! There are a lot of vintage sounds that I've been getting from customizing my own kits too. I usually use the Z3s like you said. Anyway, you are the shiznit!

Quick PC question..if anyone can answer that would be great

Im on WinXP in IE7. Does anyone have the problem on links(like the ones above) that dont just pop up Windows media player or other players--but open a new IE window And the song?

Some links on the internet just pop up the song and others pop up a window and the song

thanks

In IE6 on XP those links temporarily start a second browser window but WMP launches right away and the browser window closes. I do a bit of web work and I think it's just because and forum links are set by default to spawn a new browser window. If the links were coded to take you to them directly, WMP would probably just launch without the momentary second window. This of course assumes that the stand alone WMP is set to be the default player for internet mp3 files. Anyhoo... both cases are normal ;)

when I click on the links i get another window with quicktime.

Steven on your forum you posted an update which I'm downloading now. Are any of the NRG Z5 rooms on it?

BTW I can't register for your forum because I never get the confirmation email. This also happened with another forum I tried to join. I assume it must be my email settings but I can't figure out what.

Junk, we are redoing the audio demo portion of the website and adding categories such as Modeled Kit Demos, Rock Demos, Vintage Kit Demos, Pop Demos... etc.. This way potential users will quickly be able to hear what they want to...

We'll be adding a lot more classic drumkit demos as well as softrock/pop rock. As many of our users know, we have some great softer rock kits as well as more modern rock stuff.

The NRG room samples are going to be an amazing addition to the sample package, and I can't wait to post demos.

Also, current users please visit my forum to download update 2.01

Steven,
Big fan of your samples, at least 2.0 LE. Saved my butt on the last record I recorded. During tracking we only had 1 snare drum for 5 songs, and it only really fit well on one of them.

I'm determined to avoid this in the future, and I'm considering starting my own collection of snare drums. Since you're the expert, I was hoping you'd give me something like a "best of" list.

In other words, if could spend $1500 buying 4 different snare drums to cover a wide range of pop/rock music, what would you go for?

Man, this is a tough question. But a good one.

After careful thought I chose some moderately prices snares with a bigger then moderate sound... every studio should have:

1. Pork Pie BOB Black Beauty Copy $249 midrangey, cuts like a knife, doesn't sound exactly like my vintage Black Beautys but sure sounds good for the cash

2. Pearl Sensitone Steel 14" x 6.5 $200? big and bad ass with a crisp top end, the ultimate bargain snare

3. Vintage Ludwig Supra Snare, Noble Cooley Rims NO RESERV - eBay (item 330241288166 end time Jun-09-08 09:28:56 PDT) just bid on this and pray

4. Pearl Masters Custom 6ply maple... sounds exactly as you'd think a maple should sound... cracky, natural, with a nice sizzly top

4B. Pearl 6ply Maple Free Floater.. For more change, the 6ply free floater has a bit more decay to it and is quite a beauty as far as maples go

5. More cash but quite the "Must"... Noble and Cooley Alloy Classic Aluminum
tons and tons of CRACK great for rock

6. Tama 12 ply maple sound deep and badass, lots of crunch

7. Yamaha Brass Nouveau lots of that biting brass cut, great for aggressive music and modern rock

8. My personal favorite heavy metal snare: Tama Bell Brass... this snare alone will eat up your budget but man it CUTS like no other.

I could go on and on here... but that is a hell of a start... any four from the above list will take you quite far...

Hey there

I have ben reading up alot on Steve's drums here as I am looking for some new kits for a new album I am working on. In the past I have used alot of electronic kits and other acoustic sampled kits such as BFD and ex drummer. My style is more Hip Hop (but not the commercial gangsta club shat) and the sound of the new record is a hip hop one with live instruments being played. Think Gym Class Heroes drums or The Roots drums... mixed with a little beatles action Revolver era .. I was originally going to record live drums, however due to moving and now being crammed into a dungeon of a basement room I am going to have to scratch the idea of live drums.

So far I am happy with EZ Drummer and BFD, in a way but like everyone here, is always on the lookout for something better and from what I read SSD are the best drums to get. However alot of people say there the best for the rock genre. Do you think it would be a good investment for me, if the sound im going for drum wise has those bands drums sound? Think SSD would be a good way to go for me? I will be using Kontakt 2 in Logic Pro, if I do get them.

Thanks all

It hard to figure out without hearing some music for reference. I have a ton of sounds in the collection, 37 snares in platinum.... there is a good chance some will be to your liking... Dylan Dresdow is a mixer who has mixed Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Common, and more.. and he loves the samps.. But again, if you can give me a better idea of the sound you are trying to acheive, I can tell you if there are some specific samps that will match up.

Something that gets talked about a bit more in the SSD forums is the concept of the hybrid drum. You come with the best BFD, DFH, etc. have to offer and you combine them with SSD's. You end up with an amazing "superdrum." Whatever you add SSD's to, it will make that drum sound finished and bigger than life. This method only expands the already vast capabilities of SSD's on their own.

I'm not sure what happened along the line, but somehow SSD's got pigeonholed into being modern rock/metal samples, which they can be, but they are sooooo much more. They are country drums in the quintessential current Nashville style. They are fat and funky, they are pop, they are dry and intimate, they are wet and hugemungous, they can be quirky- if you want. I guess the only thing they aren't is the unfinished, untuned, "we threw up a 30 dollar mic from the Shack and got this sound!" drums.

Another thing that's great is the use of envelopes within Kotakt to sculpt sounds. I posted this at the SSD forums, but it's a good example of extremes when using SSD's and Kontakt. This is the cavernous Zep Kit sculpted with Kontakt envelopes:

Thats a really fantastic sounding demo from Vita, very impressive, especially when you hear how the Led Zep kit sounds without enveloping:

programmed by Keith More with my Old Zep kit:

www.stevenslatedrums.com/demo2/OLDZEP7.mp3

we have thousands of guys using these samps for classic rock, country, pop, and more. .. while there are some great hard rock and metal samps in the collection, it is far from exclusively being catered just towards that music..

Here is a mixed and mastered live POP act who performed at the VIPER ROOM first WITH SAMPLES, including the ACKick, Snare4, and Snare4's Room Sample:

www.stevenslatedrums.com/demo/ViperSamps.mp3

And here is the same mix without the samples:
