The sending yourself a recorded letter thing has never been tested in court. Solicitors suggest it the tiniest fraction better than pointless... then again perhaps they would say that. :)

Have a look at these people websongs | Home they're relatively new, haven't used them myself.

They say...

"The websongs Copyright Registration service has been set up to meet the needs of music creators who haven't, until now, had anywhere that they can register their copyrights instantaneously online. Use the websongs copyright registration service to register the copyright of your song or composition at any time. Once you have listed your song or composition on websongs, the Copyright Registration feature will be available to use in your My Account page. You can upload either the music and lyrics in PDF format or an mp3 file if you have recorded a demo of the song. Once the copyright has been registered, you will receive a date and time stamped registration certificate as proof of copyright registration with websongs.

Using this service will be subject to a fee of £1 per song for a 10 year registration. For a limited period only, this service will be free to all registered users"

having someone else copyright your work for you does not sound like a good idea. It sounds like after that 10 year period, that company probably will then own your copyright. If you feel as though your work is good enough to copyright, why not do it right?

I know in the U.S. it is not that difficult. It cost a little bit of money, but if you have good material, it should be worth protecting.

In regards to the itunes thing.. yes those sites do provide that service, but dont think that they do it for free...

Thats a well raised point ... i hadn't thought about the longevity of the copyright or ownership after the 10 yr period ... very sneaky ! .. i'll have to check the small print to see if that is true ....

I doubt my music is good enough but it would be useful to know a where a good place to copyright your music is in the UK for future artists i work with.

It has here in the U.S. and the person lost because they couldn't prove the letter hadn't been tampered with. My understanding is that about the only thing less expensive than a copyright registration is a signed, notarized affidavit from witnesses to a date that you had the song in your possession.

My understanding, from friends of the guy in question is that he did receive a sum of money but that it was pretty tiny.
