| Joining ASCAP for a band...do it as writer or publisher? For a band, what is the best way to go about joining ASCAP? If we join as a publishing company, we have to have a taxpayer id number. To have a taxpayer id number, do you have to have an employer id number first?

| This is such a complex issue.... get both.. The writers membership should be free The Publishers membership when I joined was 50 bucks and verification that you have a history in the business. I believe the basic requirements have changed in recent years.

Also, to get a taxpayer id number as a publisher, will we have to set ourselves up as a company and/or get an employer id number?

This is a whole other beast but I think I'm going to do the publishing company through BMI and register as a writer through ASCAP. So...does anyone know about that taxpayer id thing with relation to a pubishing company?

| You can join both societies as writers and publishers.. just have to do it under different affiliation names. Having a happy little consult with an entertainment lawyer is not a bad idea either if your serious about it all. ASCAP has better parties ![]()

| Does that mean you get paid twice for the same thing?

| There is a writer's share and a publisher's share. You need to register as both to collect both shares. |
