Joining ASCAP for a band...do it as writer or publisher?

For a band, what is the best way to go about joining ASCAP? If we join as a publishing company, we have to have a taxpayer id number. To have a taxpayer id number, do you have to have an employer id number first?

This is such a complex issue.... get both..

The writers membership should be free

The Publishers membership when I joined was 50 bucks and verification that you have a history in the business.

I believe the basic requirements have changed in recent years.

Yeah, according to the ASCAP site, it's $25 for each. Now...when registering as a writer, do each of us have to do that? Also, is there a way around having to enter my SSN? I don't want to give it to them.

Also, to get a taxpayer id number as a publisher, will we have to set ourselves up as a company and/or get an employer id number?

Not if you want them to pay you which is the whole point of joining!

I guess what I meant was can I get some sort of ID from the IRS that I can use instead of my SSN.

This is a whole other beast but I think I'm going to do the publishing company through BMI and register as a writer through ASCAP.

So...does anyone know about that taxpayer id thing with relation to a pubishing company?

You can join both societies as writers and publishers.. just have to do it under different affiliation names.

Having a happy little consult with an entertainment lawyer is not a bad idea either if your serious about it all.

ASCAP has better parties

Does that mean you get paid twice for the same thing?

There is a writer's share and a publisher's share. You need to register as both to collect both shares.
