Exclamation ELYSIUM - charity educational lecture about the score

Hi all

I am organizing a 3.5 hour educational lecture in Los Angeles - August 23rd

It is a lecture about producing the score for ELYSIUM - the 100 million dollar Sony blockbuster film that will be released August 9th. The film stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley (the lead actor from District 9)

It will include the orchestration, music editing, recording and mixing of the score.

I recorded the orchestral parts of the score (strings, brass, and a few solo instruments) at Abbey Road Studio 1…. then mixed the hybrid / electronica score at my studio Clearstory Sound, in 5.1

There were many, many 'virtual instruments' that were an integral part of Ryan Amon's awesome score.

All net proceeds are going to a local charity.

Tickets go on sale in a day or two, and I fully expect this event will sell out.

All the details can be seen here (including a link to buy tickets) Elysium Charity Event including bios of all of the five speakers that are a part of this lecture that I am organizing.

Hope to see you there,

John

I'd love to see something like this in London.

Whilst not film music, Ascap do some great events going into the Pro Tools sessions of Top 20 songs.

Wish they'd bring it to the UK.

I am the one organizing this Los Angeles lecture event..... and unfortunately it is very unlikely to happen more than the once.... especially not overseas.

It was tough enough to get the 5 of us together on the same day ..... as Rich and Alain are based out of Vancouver. Myself, Penka and Dave are all based out of Los Angeles.... and we all have really busy schedules, as many do.

As of now - there are no plans to record the event. Sorry about that....

John, I totally understand that. I imagine the logistics must be a nightmare. If I had the spare cash, I'd fly over. Even though I can't attend, appreciate you all putting on something like this for people!

It looks like an amazing event to pick the brains of people that are doing it at a MAJOR level. I saw some of the pictures from your mixing/mastering studio - very sweet setup & room, John! I'm tempted to fly over there for this event and see some friends while I'm at it. The credit list of the panelists is stellar.

Cheers,
Sam

Thanks everybody for the kind words.

Yeah there are a lot of logistics to arrange an event such as this one..... but I am confident that it'll be a great event.

And all net proceeds are going to an awesome local charity.

Our Mission | SRLA

The plan is that each of the 5 of us will speak for about 30-ish minutes each, then we'll open the floor up to questions, and do a panel discussion to address all the questions.

To anyone planning to attend - be sure to try to see the film beforehand....

cheers

John

Man I live in Australia. What a treat you're putting on!

In light-hearted humour, just put an iPhone on record near one of the speakers :P might be the worst recorded podcast ever but would still be an invaluable insight into the way you guys work.

Will we be actually seeing the full film at this event? Only asking so I can decide whether or not to go to the SCL screening on Thursday.

It just clicked that this is the guy who is a fairly unknown composer and the director took a risk with him after hearing his trailer music.

Hi John,

Congratulations ! You did a great job recording Elysium's score.

Thanks for posting this.

Enjoying the score quite a bit, I'm a big fan of hybrid (Orch + Synthetic) scores. This one by Ryan Amon is very interesting.

I will try to attend the event. Should be very interesting.

Also interested in knowing more about what virtual synths were used

All The Best,

Muziksculp

Thanks for the kind words... it was great fun to record and mix Ryan Amon's score for ELYSIUM.

and...

Many people have recently asked me what virtual libraries Ryan liked... and used on Elysium.

I know he owns a bunch, and likes a bunch of different ones.... plus he also makes his own sounds....

and

.... he was recently interviewed here

John - I hope the event was a smash & well attended! Work precluded me from being able to make the hop to L.A. As a small consolation prize AVID sent me a link this morning to an excellent series of four videos interviewing YOU about Elysium and your workflow in general:

Pro Mixing Without Limits: John Rodd

Pretty cool man! Enjoyed watching it and it makes a tight promo package for you & the magic that you do. Congrats on the spotlight.

Best,
Sam

Hey Sam

Thanks for the kind words....

The educational lecture that I organized was a huge success, with about 220 people in attendance.

Almost everybody stayed to the very end - 4 hours of lecturing, and 4 different Q+A sessions.

I believe ProSound News will be publishing some coverage of the event.

We raised a bunch of money for the great organization Students Run LA, but we also helped raise awareness of Students Run LA, and the fine work that they do.

cheers

John
