Here's a few "mods" I've done to my DAW that I got from musicxp.com.

Quote:
1 Customize the speed of your start up menu.

Click Start, and then click Run. Type Regedit in the box, and then click OK. Expand the menu in the left panel and select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop folder. Scroll down in the right panel and double click on the MenuShowDelay file. In the Value Data box, change to default value for the menu speed from 400 to a lesser number, such as 1. Click OK.
Quote:
2 Disable NTFS Last Access Time Logging (NTFS Only)

Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CURRENTCONTROLSET > CONTROL > FILESYSTEM Add a new DWORD value - "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate" (without quotes) and set the value to 1. Then reboot to make changes effective
Quote:
3 Disable CDROM Autoplay

Start > Run > Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

Set autorun to 0.
Quote:
4 Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips

Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then press ENTER. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips . Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0 . Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.

www.tweakXP.com is another valuable site for registry and other tweaks.

With re the menu speed tweak... I've often fallen prey to the temptation to set this too low for my usual way of working and I end up having to carefully mouse over to submenus (so they don't suddenly disappear if my mouse strays a little)... until I finally break down and go back and re-tweak it.

(Of course, one of the best menu behavior tweaks can be done right from the control panel settings... there's an option for "menu animation" that strikes me as just silly... it forces menus to "roll down" and up... with today's computers it goes by pretty fast, admittedly, but on my first XP machine five years ago, it was quite annoying. My first impression was that XP was massively slower in its GUI than W98... but turning off some of MS's silly gewgaws really straightened things out.)

The CD-auto play turn-off is an important one... You used to be able to turn that behavior from a right click on the drive but that seems to be gone.

BTW... I was just reading up some more on Vista...

I will NOT be an early adopter.

I'm edging closer and closer to the "pry-XP-from-my-cold-dead-hands" camp.

Why not using 'Tweak UI' from the 'PowerToys'? No registry hacking necessary ... and many more options.
get it here:

Using Tweak UI just isn't as geeky as going in manually editing the registry...but I do like the program! Just remember to make a backup of your reg before you do any "Serious" mods to it.

Well I used the gaming settings on my Music Computer and it made a massive difference i just went with gaming option as it was the one that removed the most junk out of the registry, however I use this configuration on all my computers (except for the internet settings) as the majority of the registry you dont need running!
