| WHAT THE HELL DO I NEED!!!! Man i've been rackin my brains tryina work out how i can arrange the following equipment and wat size mixer and soundcard do i need. And wether or not i'll need a mixer or a converter?. here the diklema i will only be recording one vocal track and a stereo pair coming from a ran 52i mixer. now here's what's got me stumped i wanna use an outboard eq and outboard multi effects rack how the hell would i set this up to a) minimise sound degradation b) so i dont have to keep swaping around plugs c) so i can run it through eq then back in and be able to switch between the dry signal and the wet signal. wat would be the best size sound and a high end one - do i need a cnverter and wat size mixer and if u can sugest a high end one. also keeping in mind i will be doing no processing except the mixing and recording - wat program would be best to use? am i better of just getting a mixer and a harddisk recorder or will a pc serve my purpose? |

| We need a little more information before we can make informed suggestions. Do you need to record the vocal track and the stereo tracks at the same time? or can you overdub one after recording the other? This drives whether you need three tracks or just two for input, which had a huge impact on what you need. Similarly, if you know that you have to use outboard effects and EQ, this means that you are unwilling to do the effects and EQ in the DAW software? How much do you want to spend on each part, and in total? Questions, questions.

| no I'll only be recording max 2 tracks sim. I will be using a kurzweil ksp8 for the outboard effects - i've been reading that u can use an mlan? but i dont know how this exactly works. as for software i want to keep it simple, i will only be using it for multitrack recording and mixing, plus choping sampled loops. |

| With only two tracks at once, you can use nearly anything, including the soundblaster that came in your PC. While you won't like the quality long term, you can use it to learn without spending any money. Don't know the specifics on your kurzweil, have to let someone else step in. N-tracks is cheap and will do basic tracking and mixing, for at least 16 simultaneous tracks. Basic stereo can be done with Cool Edit 2000, which used to be about $70. Most of the other packages aim for more simultaneous incoming tracks, software plugin effects, etc. Of course, there are all the Linux packages... you don't say which OS you like. I do all my effects in with plugins, and mix there, and burn CDs. It works for me. There are so many options, I like starting cheap.
