Is direct monitoring enabled in nuendo too? Control room properly set up?
Few more details would help to help you.

I dont understand what you mean by "as soon as I delete them"
If your 2 buss is channel 1 and 2 that's where your monitoring will be fed as well, unless you have it going somewhere else

let me ask a simpler question that could make everything easier. How do you hear your click/metrenome with out using outputs under the studio tab and using the control room mixer?

You have it backwards man. You want to UNCHECK direct monitoring in Nuendo. Direct monitoring means you are monitoring directly (no latency) through hardware. If you want to hear your signal through Nuendo you have to have direct monitoring off.

im trying to get away from latency when people sing. Ive had direct monitoring work at some point in my career but never used it much. Now in nuendo 3 i cant get it. I want sound to be coming from the mic no matter whats happening in nuendo and I dont care about using effects and eq live through nuendo. I need a clean delay free signal.

Ok then you want to have Direct Monitoring checked. This disables software monitoring which includes latency. So since Nuendo is not monitoring your signal you have to setup your hardware to do so. What you hear while tracking is all in the hardware world. If you can't hear your signal with Direct Monitoring then it has nothing to do with the software because you have chosen to monitor through the hardware to eliminate latency.

Direct Monitoring checked : Nuendo does not monitor the signal. It will track it but to be able to hear the signal while tracking is done through hardware. Pros: no real latency - Cons: Can't track hearing vst effects. Nuendo has no control over how you monitor in this mode.. it is all done in your hardware!

Direct Monitoring unchecked : Nuendo monitors your signal from your interface with latency. Pros and Cons are opposite of above.

i think i just have a freak situation with this rme digiface. Ive done everything Ive read in the manuals and with or without nuendo on I cant hear through the rme. the only time i can hear through the rme is in nuendo with nuendo doing the monitoring.

I have an RME 96/52 so I am not sure if the mixing software is similar to what you have but with the 96/52 hdsp the console all the faders were down by default. So open your console and it may be as simple as turning up your faders and checking the output below each channel.
