Exclamation budget etc

i was hoping not to have to spend more than 700 quid top whack!

8 channels would be nice however not essential - but portability and sound quality are my main criteria...

i was lookin at MOTU 828 mk11 firwire/ tc konnekt24d and wonderin what else was worth a look?

cheers

I was gonna say FireFace or save up for the Apogee Ensemble, especially if you plan
to run Logic as your primary DAW.

It's hard enough to get 2 high end I/Os in your price range.

I purchased my M-Audio PMIO for $999.00 when they first came out and it's fine
for basic project studio work, but I've come to discover that all I really needed was
2 very good I/O channels or 4 at the very most at any one time.

I'm not recording live drums or a live band, so there's very little need for 8 simultaneous
inputs.

I really wish Apogee would offer a 4 channel I/O Quartet version of the Ensemble and their Symphony cards specifically for small project studios.

I have Konnekt 24D and use it with C2D MacBook Pro.

I like the converter very well but I haven't compared it against RME or MOTU directly. The sound tends to be a bit mellow or creamy, not too digital, especially in the mid high range, very sweet. I've had Echo Gina 24, indigo io, NI Audio Kontrol 1, and the Konnekt 24D sounds way better than them (echo's ADC is also very good but DAC isn't very good IMO), YMMV. The pres are pretty nice, clean, transparent.

The latency can be trimmed down to 64 samples after the 1.03 driver and pretty stable but sometimes my Mac can't detect the device when booting and I have to turn off and on the device manually. But it's getting more stable and reliable and TC frequently has updated the driver so far.

DSP effects are very impressive. They can't be used as VST/AU plugins but it's really useful especially for Logic Pro users as they can be virtually used as plugins by inserting helper > IO and setting them to computer s/r mode (it's not that easy in other daws). You can store these settings so that you can make a setting for tracking vocals setting the Fabrik Reverb to internal mode for the confident reverb, and make another setting for mixing. You can toggle between the settings just by pressing the DSP total recall button on the front panel. Very useful and the sound quality is top notch.

Note that it can't be buss powered by new Core2Duo MacBook Pro at the moment. The same problem occurs with some other firewire interfaces too. I hope they'll fix it with a future firmware update but I won't probably sell this even if they can't fix it.

As for portability, it's OK but not so light. Fireface 400 is smaller and lighter. As you use 17' model, Metric Halo and Motu Traveler won't really fit your laptop they go well with 15' macs.

Lastly, I think this is probably the best looking audio interface with an exception of Apogee Ensemble. Looks really cool with MacBook Pro.
