"Error while trying to sync audio and MIDI" - Logic Pro

I'm messin around with my new macbook. I dumped a bunch of songs over from my G5 today. I just opened one up to see how the Core Audio would handle some simple arranging / mixing without using any external interface.

As the song plays I get this error message popping up over and over that says: "Error while trying to sync audio and MIDI"

Any idea what this is all about? The song that is currently causing this error message consists of about 5 audio tracks that have been bounced from Reason (Reason is not currently running, just Logic), and about 2 or 3 Virtual Inst tracks. Thoughts? Suggestions?

generally it means that the sample and clock rate don't match.

restarting the entire system or find the culprit interface/clock using device fixes it for me.

Well I've got the sample rate on my FF800 and the sample rate in Logic both set to 44.1 right now so I'm confused. Could it have to do with bit depth? I have Logic set to 16 bit. The FF800 is 24 bit i know.

By the way, is it possible (just out of curiousity) to change the bit rate on the FF800 or is it always 24 bit?

Logic often throws out this alert message as a generic way of saying "something lost sync". In my experience (and I've used Logic since before version 1.0) it's usually just a result of the system being overworked.

Even on my new Mac Pro, with low CPU loads, if the hard drive is a little slow, or the UAD cards are overloaded, or a sampler just isn't 'ready', then I get that message. I just hit stop and start again. It often happens when I've set the buffers really low (64 samples), which I think causes a bit of an issue with the UAD1 plugins.

If you're getting the error alot, try changing to bigger buffers (in your Audio Hardware config page), or checking the settings for disk buffers, virtual memory (in the EXS24 prefs) etc.

Good luck!

Thanks, I'll give that try.

It seems to happen a lot more when I'm just using the macbook by itself (no audio interface, just internal audio). So I agree with your hunch about the system being 'overworked'.

I bring the laptop to work when its slow just to mess around and that's when I seem to get that message the most. If I'm plugged into the Fireface at home I'm usually fine.
