Looking for a laptop for recording

I'll be using SONAR 6 Producer Edition (SONAR is designed for PC) and WILL NOT be buying a MAC, so please don't bother recommending a MAC.

I saw this GateWay (click the link below). It has a 2.0 Ghz processor and 2 gigs of RAM right out of the box. How well do the 4 pin FireWire inputs on notebooks perform?

4-pin Firewire is fine.

You'll be much happier if you get a 7,200 RPM drive. You can always use Norton Ghost to back up your new system, pop out the current drive, and pop in a new one.

Can you wait? Apparently, the Intel Robson technology that will come out in Spring 2007, which puts enough Flash memory onto the motherboard that the system can boot from Flash, is going to be a very good improvement in performance and battery life.

If you can't wait, I'd just say buy a Centrino Duo, regardless of manufacturer. Centrino rocks!

I guess I could just swap the hard drive.

What's the deal with running an external hard drive along with the internal one?

ray....
ive posted many tips in the past re notebooks.
if you search under my name.
orocessor is just one aspect.
one tip i'll reiterate.....ensure you test out your firewire sound device with the laptop you intend to buy before buying it to ensure compatibility.
(assuming your useing a firewire sound device,).
ive been testing a ton of laptops in past 6 months.
and am impressed by the new intel core duo 2 and also dual amd turion 64 processors.
(latter cheaper.).BUT TEST YOUR AUDIO MULTITRACKING APP BEFORE BUYING THE LAPTOP IF YOU CAN.peace.

That looks really good. I am also looking at Gateways for Sonar/Cubase/PT. That one seems even better with the bigger screen. I thought that i had read something about the Sata drives, even though lower rpm, better then 7200rpm?
Even using the system drive for audio...

Have been through 3 Toshiba laptops (A70, A100, P100) with little success - all kinds of FW problems... just bought an HP Pavillion dv5230... it ROCKS! Fantastic FW performance and otherwise...
