UAD PLATE 140 stereo?

I read somewhere that UAD PLATE 140 is not true stereo and that you should use two for that... I just did that and it does sound better, but... Is it true? And how do you do it? I just made two fx channels with plate 140 on in Nuendo, panned them LR and sent all the signals I wanted to both of them...

So? Any opinions, knowledge about that. I was unable to find anything on that in google or here...

Appreciate your comments.

Well I think you should worry less about such a things and listen to it. Is it sounding bad? Do you miss "true stereo" when you are listening to how it works?

It is a model of plate reverb design where you had plate vibrating from summed signal and 2 pickups. It is as artificial as it can be... but it sounds good and special, that's what it is about.

Other thing is that often it is preferable to have mono (sumed) sends into reverbs instead of stereo, because it sounds better (not always, as there are no rules).

I agree, I don't think it's true stereo, but I just tracked some strings, via Reason strings, and with the plate on them they sounded oh so sweet.

You mean as compared to a real plate, or as compared to digital reverb?

In an EMT 140, there's only one input driver, and thus one send to the reverb, but there are two pickups.

This would be similar to having a mono source with stereo mics.

To me, the problem with using two mono reverbs is that they share nothing.

Stereo reverb should have a lot of crosstalk.

The EMT 240 (the gold foil one) has two transducers and two pickups, so it's true stereo.

Here's a pic. of a 140. See how there's one input driver (which vibrates the plate with whatever signal you send it) and two pickups?

Here's the gold foil one. I checked one out a couple of days ago, and it sounded really nice.

Now I want one.

Max went to a lot of trouble to explain, which is very nice of him.

I owned a 140ST. It is a mono input/ stereo output device. Since the UAD-1 plugin is an emulation, it is also a mono input/ stereo output device. It is what it is, and I've never thought a 140ST sounded anything but great.

There was a pure mono In and Out version of the 140 as well, with the 140ST being the stereo version introduced later. So the answer to your question is, mono input and stereo output is the way the 140ST was designed to be used.

FWIW I was recording at a studio back in the 80's that had all the new gear.....224X, PCM70, Yammie Rev1, etc.

They also had a EMT 140 but because it was "just a plate" they didn't really pimp it that much.

One night we were doing rough mixes and I had gone in the back to take a dfegad
and noticed the Plate in a back room.

I came back into the CR, and said "hey man, what's with that plate verb in the back?", at the time we figured digital = better but then the engineer patched the 140 in (API console) and we went "WOW, that thing sounds F'ing GREAT"

I've got the UAD-1 140 and while I don't think it sounds exactly like a real EMT 140, it sounds a lot more like the real thing than any "digital plate reverb algo" I have ever heard.

Try a Hammond patch (or the real thing) through the UAD-1 Plate 140 some time, that makes that sound

Thanks guys, nice replys. I don't worry too much. I was just curious. Anyway - I tryed two Plate 140 L-R and it is even phatter... I think I will use that king of set up when reverberating dry acoustic music, but for more pop, rock stuff I will stick to just one or several different for different instruments / voices...

running one L & one R will open up the center for the dry signal...much better sounding to me.
I rarely let the reverb trail touch the center...maybe a little delay.
I get more seperation and depth this way.
