Master Buss...whatcha' got?

Just curious what people are running on their master buss...

I have been using the UA Pultec with the Neve 33609 at very low settings for that final glue...

thought this might be a fun discussion...i'm bored at work....

nothing on the mix bus here.

don't know why, but nothing sounds as good as even a Budget Compressor on the mix.

I do an analog insert into either a Drawmer 1968, a Tube Tech CL2B or an SE C2 comp, but I reall don't use them as compressors, as much as for the color. I run the outputs on full, long attack, short release, and then get the level from the input/threashold, so there's no actual gain reduction from the comp circuitry, but it still tames the transients due to analog clipping. Then I go into a Summit 200B for a bit of sub bass reduction, and/or add a couple dB of 16K sheen if needed.

i don't want to hijack the thread but...do you guys insert compressors on the master bus just for mixing or do you send them off to the mastering house too after having passed the audio through the master bus with a comp inserted?

analog - TFPro 38 > avalon AD 2055 > cranesong spider

or 2 pendulum quartets linked > spider

ITB - waves ssl, sony dynamics, phoenix, analog channel.... not all at once

eq - massenburg, waves ssl

Usually something like:

UAD Precision EQ, TC MD3, Sony Inflator, TC Brickwall Limiter, then out to Avalon 747 for some nice tube flavoring, non-compression compression and some of that sweet 747 eq. Generally, I like just a little from each of these along the way. That Precision EQ seems to add a little something even with all controls set flat...how does a plugin do that?

drawmer 1968 to avalon 747 for tube and EQ.

the drawmer i'll have on during mixing, while the 747 is only applied when i print back to logic.

re mix buss

i been using a spare pair of api line cards to tame transients,
maybe a bit of vari-mu on the way to tape, but not always.
then off for mastering.

- the waves ssl stereo comp
- plenty of master-buss volume automation
- 90% of the time i convince myself that if i need eq on the buss i should just figure out what i can do to the mix instead

Analog- Smart C2 sidechained so it's not affecting the lows. Sometimes the Vari-Mu but usually I save it for drum or other bus duties.

Digital- Cranesong Phoenix (Iridescent/Opal with the input trimmed back a bit. The high end distortion with Gold and Sapphire are too much for me, but the low/low mid bump of Opal is nice). Also a bit of Hedd Pentode. Very small amounts of both of these.

Sonalksis stereo comp : ratio around 1.5.1 or so , slow attack and just tickling the gain reduction meter most of the time but registering maybe 2 db or a little less on the very loudest parts.

I'm kind of into having an arsenal of flavors for my master bus:

Waves SSL comp
BF Fairchild 670
PSP Vintage Warmer, MasterComp
Sony Oxford Inflator

Then either the Sony Oxford or Steve Massey's limiter.

Nicer 16, then Cranesong STC-8 or Smart C1, then possibly a dash of portico 5042, then possibly 1-2db of GML 8200 shelving somewhere above 12-16K, then back into Lavry blue and/or 1/4". Sony Oxford limiter for listening ref.

Haven't rocked a plugin on the master buss for awhile now...

99% of the time...nothing. Sometimes it needs some slight EQ. Never a fan of compressor on the master buss.

Portico 5012 with the silk switch on followed by a Portico 5043 with 1-2 db compression looped back to A/D Lynx for round 1 of stereo track . Then the UAD Limiter only on the final tracks.
