fw1884 might be dead?!?

Here is the problem with my tascam fw1884, Today When I powered it on the usual boot stage did not occur. That boot stage usually flickers all the lights on the interface for a split second or so. instead the only light that comes on is a the little orange light right above the stop botton. The firewire connection to the pc is still communicating, but no sound is playing through the board. I tried numerous reboots and power up's but nothing.... My question is has anyone experience this problem before? if so how do you fix it and can you reintialize(if possible) the fw1884? Hopefully I didint burn out any chips in the board!

Thanks!

so a tascam service rep confirm that my fw1884 is dead! I need to send it in for repair!

I hate to bitch about anything but I have to say that Tascam is a nightmare to deal with! the people there are rude! this Fw1884 has been buggy since I had It my system and did I mention the rudeness of the reps there! After I get this product repaired, I will sell the fw1884 and never deal with tascam again! In the mean time Im looking to get a new "good" interface, Im not really concern with a controller at the moment, I want to get nice converters and pres. As far as in's and out's I really don't need that many, and I dont need midi. Which product would you guys recommend? I have a 1500 dollar budget. Thanks

I would go with an Echo Audiofire 12 and a Mackie 800r. I have that combo(along with some other higher end pres) and I think that will blow your current rig out of the water. The 800r, IMO, gets a really bad rap around here but I've found them to be very nice, clean pres with a nice DI. Very good all-purpose pres. Now there will be a stream of high-enders that will rip them but I believe them to be flat-out wrong.

As far as the Audiofire. I believe that to be the best sub-$1000 conversion available and beats even some of the way-more-expensive converters out there.

Hey i like the price of the echo audiofire 12 and it seems like a very usuable piece, only concern, I dont see any gain trims on the thing... thats the only thing that turns me off alil... as far as the 800r I dont think I need more than 2 mic pre inputs. THanks!!!

Jhooks,

It's got a very nice software mixer. That's where you control inputs on most converters.

And if you only need 2 channels, you could go with a much nicer dual channel pre.

How about a nice, fat, warm Sebatron VMP 2000e for just over a Grand?

Ditch the FW1884. Besides Tascam's crappy support, this is a box is a multitude of problems. Today it is this, but tomorrow it may be something far worse (and Tascam still seems to think that it is a trouble-free box).

Don't ever plug in a mic with phantom on- you WILL eventually blow up not just the preamp, but the entire analog front end (in groups of 4 inputs). Don't go beyond about 8 feet of FW cable. Otherwise, get a repeater. You'll likely loose your connection at the worst possible time...

The list goes on... dfegad FW1884.

If at all possible, try to deal with people that will let you return it if it doesn't work for you. But yeah, do all the research you can and be sure. This stuff costs an arm and a leg it nothing sucks more than to end up with something you hate.

I kept my 1884 and use it simply as a control surface (I use an Aroura 16 for I/O). I have not found another control surface that feels as good as the 1884, although I am open to suggestions.

I have used it alot for location recording.

For what its worth this was one of the very 1st units off the press and all these years later I a have had zero issues.

Cool Dude. I'm psyched to help. I really believe this rig plays way better than it's rep. The price is just unbelievable to me. I'm planning on adding another for 24 tracks in the not too distant future.

Glad to help.

Fw1884 + 2 x FE8's into G5/Logic pro 7.2.2 here ... buggy ? yes. I got a Duende ... man the FW1884 hates the Duende !!!!! ....i had to work out an elaborate power up procedure for the system .... took me a whole day to figure it out .... I don't think its so much the FW1884's problem ... Firewire is the issue. I can go days without any problems ... the all of a sudden, for no apparent reason .... DON"T go anywhere near 96Khz with FW1884 + Duende .... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !
