Cranesong Phoenix or Duy Dad Tape?

Has anyone used both?

Which is more realistic/sound better?

Opinions?

I have both but since getting Phoenix, I must admit this is the one I use mostly. They are both great in different ways. Phoenix use less DSP and can easily be used across all channels.

I use Tape on the mixbus (lots of people like phoenix there too) and Phoenix all over everything else. I couldn't live without both- Tape on the master is mandatory for me. Adds so much heft to the bottom of my mixes without getting boomy or muddy.

Phoenix is great for subtly darkening or brightening tracks while adding some size too. If you can only get one get Phoenix.

Or get Massey Tape Head if you want something a little more obvious.

1. Cranesong Phoenix is the only plug in that I was very impressed with! The subtleness and warm tones!
2. I remember using the DUY yrs ago but it never grabbed my attention enough to buy the plug in but it sounded fine.
3. Massey Tape Head is not my style. Most love the sound and I still don’t know quite why besides the price! Which I believe is major factor for most in my opinion. I have tried to use it on a few sessions and I’ve found it to be more of an amped up edgy a bit boring effect plug in then anything else, again I past on it. It’s quite easy to sound edgy then to sound warm…

My two cents worth and a pint!

Cranesong Phoenix! INDEED

I understand what you mean that tape head can be edgy at times. That's a bonus for though. If I am going to add further processing plugins to a session I want to here a definite change to the sound.

I found particularly with DUY I almost had to convince myself it made a difference. With phoenix I found i could strip back a few instances from a mix and not be able to tell the difference when playing a mix in the car. When something is that subtle you have to ask yourself is it really worth the extra processing.

Tape plugins

I have Duy Tape, Phoenix & AC2. I find Phoenix to be most useful, it has settings to brighten or darken a sound along with several levels of saturation. One drawback, tends to distort bright sounds like cymbals, belltres, etc. In that case I use AC2, it has a bit of a softer attack. I used to use Duy Tape exclusively, but now that there are other choices, not so much.

cranesong for me. I never got into DUY.

Massey is ace, but ONLY because of the low price. It certianly has a tpaey flavour, but is not in the league of Pheonix. Tape machines were/are quite good you know! they're not always supposed to distort to high heaven!!

I have the Portico unit, but pheonix is better purely because of the differences you can get out of it. Having said that - Portico is the best sounding but is very much a one trick pony, i suppose a bit like having one tape machine.

I've been using Colortone by Tritone. It has Impulse Responses of the Portico tapebox, the Fatso and various tape machines. Wondering if anyone's compared it to the Phoenix plug.

Colortone

Depending on the impulse response and settings you choose, you can use it on a single track or on a mix for fattening, brightening, warming, thinning, weirding out.... it models the sounds of different hardware: classic preamps, compressors, eq's, tape machines, old crappy tape, tape emulators, even a Pod. Some of my current faves are a Telefunken V72 and the Portico tape box. The 1272 and Great River IR's are cool too. But you'll find your own faves, and then you'll find more.

The great thing and the bad thing is that there are SO many impulse responses, and so many possible settings....one can get lost looking for the right sound, but you can often find one that really gives you something great that you couldn't have gotten elsewhere. great on vocals and mixes.

It would be cool if someone would come up with a few great presets. Then it might be easier to compare it to some of the other warming, fattening plugs.

colortone pro has nothing on any of the plugins discussed in this thread as far as emulating the characteristics of tape.
