OK to use marker pens to write on CDs/DVDs??

Is it OK to use marker pens to write directly onto the top surface of CDs and DVDs? Are there any risks involved???

Thanks people.

don't use the normal sharpie....it can cause some surface breakdown. but the CD/DVD markers.

Well I just made a bunch of dvdrs and labelled with a sharpie. How bad is it for a dvdr? Maybe I should re rip and burn these with proper markers if I want them to last years?

OH MY G-O-D !!!!!

well, there have been studies done where regular sharpies do eat away at the surface. if you can re-burn, it might not be a bad idea. (but, i have a TON of older ones before i read about this...i am not about to re-burn those.) so, moving forward, i would use the proper marking pen.

as to the CD/DVD pens being detrimental, i have not seen anything on that...

I just successfully ripped 2 CD-Rs. One was burned in March of 96 and the ther in January of 97. Both had sharpie writings all over them. Both ripped error free. I wouldnt worry much about Sharpies on CD-Rs if I were you.

I have some CDR's from 10 years ago that work fine even though I wrote on them with a regular sharpie. I have labeled every CDR I have ever burnt with a regular sharpie and never had any problems with data or audio... DVDRs too

My clients have never had a problem with their CD/DVD's from years ago even with regular sharpie markings on 'em...

write on the protective layer and not on the surface and you will be fine.
a CDR/DVDR disc will fail of its own accord regardless and long before ink breaks down the protective layer.
