I'm Giving up and in.

So I just made the decision. After 20 years of Mac use, I have broken down and purchased a PC for the studio. I am sad and yet at the same time a bit excited.
There are a few things on the old mac that I'm not sure how to live w/out. # 1 is Soundesigner II. I have kept that software and never let it die even when I was told that it wouldn't run on my G3. Somehow someone got me a copy that worked.
What would a good replacement for this 2 track software. I really loved how easy SDII was to navigate. Something else is Masterlist Cd which I used all the time for my final burn of an album. What would be a good replacement for that as well??

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks,

Chris

My suggestion is to go for Sony Sound Forge with it's companion CD Architect. I do believe that SF can open SDII projects.

Bruce

Blackwater, congrats on the switch. I second the notion on Soundforge, it is a great piece of software, I have been using it for years. I believe that Wavelab is worth checking out too, but I haven't really used it.

With the PC, you will love your ability to upgrade with new parts as time goes on. I haven't bought a new PC in years, my box just morphs into the latest technology one part at a time (www.newegg.com is my best friend in that department). I'm sure that the PC vs. Mac crowd will get after you about the switch, but I'm sure that you will be happy. I have always been a PC guy, so I couldn't tell you that one is better than the other.

With so many DAW's available on PC, I'm sure you really can't go wrong no mattter what you pick. As for the CD Burning, I choose Nero because it is very versatile, easy to understand, and it works.

The timing is a bit odd since the Mac platform is in a better shape than in a very long time (20 yrs..), both in terms of hardware and software. But good luck to you

I don´t use audio editors much but WaveLab and SoundForge seem to be quite good, Also i believe that Samplitude has a version done in purpose to this. For burning i think the most reliable is Prassi Ones, nevertheless WaveLab has CD\DVD mastering.
I edit and process everything inside Cubase.

BTW good luck with the switch, let me had that almost every program created on the last decade still run on XP... I kind of think that Apple flip flopping and now the UB thing has something to with your decision.

Bye.

I recently switched

I've been a PC guy for years. I've probably built over 50 computers, at least 10 of them for recording purposes. I recently got a 12" powerbook and have since bought my wife a Macbook and myself a Mac Mini. OSX is a much better operating system and the Apple hardware is good.

The PC side is fine, but you must do a lot of research. Certain motherboards are tried and true, others are a crapshoot. I'd get Adobe Audition. It's a lot like Sound Forge, but it's got a Spectrogram editor and a multitrack environment.

I'm going to replace my P4 studio machine with a G5 and the P4 will be dedicated to Audition. The Spectrogram editor is amazing as a mixdown deck.

Gigasampler, Soundforge, Audition, Wavelab, and Acid are all PC only. They're all great programs.

Frankly, I like both platforms. MACs for their OS and hardware, PC for their flexibility and ubquity. If Audition ran on the MAC I'd probably have no need for a PC anymore.

Oh, and OS9 sucks. At least it did for me. When I refer to MACs OS being good, I mean OSX.

Try Wavelab - IMO it's the best bit of audio software you can buy.

Just keep in mind every studio needs two computers: so you can master and burn CD's on one while you're printing CD packaging, lyrics sheets, and the all-important invoice on the other one. This will give you the excuse to buy a new Mac, and when you hit the wall with your new PC (Piece 'o Crap) you can delegate your mastering/CD burning duties to Bill Gates while you enjoy the enhanced funtionality, elegance, and dependability of OSX.

Hi,

I was a pc user fro many years and then turned to mac I am now really considering going back to Pc. PCi slots and more availability of software the main reasons. I went to Mac because of Logic but now I use Live more so with the Pc it doesnt matter so much.

Yeah, get an Atari or a C64- just to impress clients! Or for some nice games. Come on, you know you need two computers, one for work and another for the web, writing bills and that. You don't surf with your main machine, do you?

water...
just some ideas....pc.
1. core 2 duo is very fast. but amd's dual cores are no slouch.
but duo is king right now.
2. load up on memory. xp likes lots of memory.
3. i prefer drives with 16 mb cache.
4. make sure you have a power supply that doesnt puff out as you add peripherals in the future.
5. i dont know what your needs are in the multitracking or midi area.
but on some lazy sunday check out what i use in my sig.
(reaper very strong on the audio side, powertracks very strong on the midi side as well as lots of interesting audio features.)
also on the reaper forums is a VERY interesting thread about pc audio plug ins that folks like and what works etc. in case your looking for plug ins.
ie..audio fx/comp/lims/echo/rvb/amp sims etc etc.
you also might find noisevault.com interesting.
as well as kvr-vst.com re plug ins etc.
sound forge is very nice, but also at hitsquad.com are various
free/shareware stereo editors you might find have some feature you might find usefull.
peace.

I have contemplated going to MAC because of all the hype, however I have been able to run Cubase and Wavelab with no issues ever on a PC. I second the New Egg approach to building a DAW. I have found that I enjoy making my own PC's as well as all the choices for upgradeing when needed. In addtion as boring as a Windows is it still works if you know how to configure it and correctly for your application.
