recommendations/discussion....any decent computer speakers for recording/monitoring ?

dunno about the rest of you but i would like to free up some real estate.
ie...get rid of the typical studio power amp/monitor set up and hook up a DECENT pair of speakers to the sound card output which are self powered and include also a headphone jack for monitoring.
any ideas ?? there are some many computer speakers (with subwoofers)
BUT as we all know they often are not accurate for use as monitors.
whats folks thoughts on this ??
heres my needs....
1. good freq range (go down pretty low.)
2. faithfully repro as far as possible.
.ie...MIXES MADE ON THEM TRANSLATE WELL TO OTHER SYSTEMS.)
3. site either side of a center computer monitor.
4. affordable...lol.
any ideas ??
ive looked at a bunch but not found anything for a second little recording set up i'm building. a lot sound pretty trashy.
i'm sure i'm not the only one with this need.
would appreciate any recommendations.

I have a pair of the Bose Companion 2 computer speakers that I used to mix with before I got my monitors. They do a pretty descent job, actually. I make some hip-hop beats and the ones I made with them sound as good as any I've done. They are deceivingly good with bass and balance even with their small size and without a subwoofer. They take a little bit of getting used to (as do any monitors), but once you get them down, they are pretty good. For $99, they CAN NOT be beat. I used to take them everywhere with me, and would still if I was travelling. They have excellent soung quality and are very portable. (I like them better than my friend's Samson powered monitors)

I'd seriously give them a shot. For $99 bucks, why not?

I got the Event ASP8s and I think they give the Mackie HR824s a run for their money (maybe even hands down beat them)... they're big and not so cheap, you'll spend around $900 for a pair used (I got mine on eBay for $800 so you can get them fairly cheap)... I hear the Blue Sky stuff is pretty killer for a few hundred less... for something good and somewhat true you need to spend over $500, but the best quality will be around $1000 (this is prosumer, I'm not even going to mention the $5000 setups)...
as always, trust your ear not my opinion... good luck!

Bump. I'd be interested in this as well.

Today I saw the Creative Labs GigaWorks T20 which could be interesting, but I have no idea how they sound.

Do you prefer the M00 (332 euro incl. VAT) over the Genelec 8020A (289 euro incl. VAT)?

Thanks,
