Thread Starter | Buy MacBook/MacBook pro now, or wait for new processors?
I know, I know, new processors are coming soon.. But is it smart to buy the first machines in a new batch? Do I have to wait for months to buy a new machine? |

I am one to ask myself the same kind of questions... If you want your computer now go buy it and don't look back... I say that because it will always be this way... more and more even... The next new thing is never too far ahead... Anyways the difference in power isn't probably worth the headache... WHEN WILL THE MADNESS STOP??? |

I have a macbook pro and it rules. 2.33ghz and 2gb of ram. For what I do it's great. I use an onyx 1640 with up to 16ch of 24bit sound and I haven't have any problems. I think that computers are surpassing even the needs of audio engineering as we speak. By this I mean that 1 gig of ram and over a ghz is enough to be able to do 16 channels of high quality sound. Basically you probably need a new computer with a gig or two of ram and this will handle your musical computer needs. The only point in waiting is for it to get cheaper, or if you're an extreme in-the-boxer with 24 digital effects on all 32 channels, then you might have to wait. Faster isn't always better, especially when it's not something you really need past a certain point. What I'm trying to say is if all you needed your computer for was word processing, a Mac LCII would work fine. So figure out what you need, when you need it, and what your budget is - and THEN look for it. Also keep in mind, unlike vintage equipment, a few months will dramatically decrease the price so maybe you would want to wait a few months and buy a macbook on ebay and it will really pay off to wait if you don't need it now.

I am in the same position. I am waiting for the new ones. I am **cked if I am buying one only to see it 30% faster within a couple of months. Yeah they will always be releasing new ones but I would rather lust over a quicker one later rather than sooner. |

New computer with new O.S. means new software to run it or make use of the power and old software usually needs to be updated because...issues creep in.The promise of new power is relevent to how demanding you are when running your software.i.e. Track counts/plug-ins/soft synths all running at the same time can bring you back to where you were before you upgraded or not significantly better.(nothing you probably don't know). Unless you are sure you are making a big leap,I vote to hang out and wait.I wish I did a few times.I still have my first set up...Protools L.E. 5? ON OS/9 with a g4 533 with an accelerater card for the scsi drive!.Since the drive is on a separate port than the non-firewire audio interface,It's actually more stable and smoother and less buggy than my PTLE 6 AND7 WITH OUT THE SPINNING WHEEL Stuff.I just miss out on the newer plugs but it's rock solid for native.SOOOO,When I thought I was upgrading to the 002 and a powerbook g4 lap 1.3 with the "music production toolkit"along with a firewire drive and an audio interface on the same firewire cable, I was not impressed with any significant speed up due to a conjested firewire bus trying to handle the load of processing waves and tl space and more tracks. In my case,it's a lap top.A new 8 core tower at 3mhz with xtra RAM handlin audio on it's internal drive will blaze with speed compared to what Im doing.Just get the audio interface hooked up via separate PCI CARD/..NOT FIREWIRE and you are golden.Correct me if Im wrong but that's my 2 cents. |

I just got a refurbed Macbook 2GHZ Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM 1050.00 (USD) I think the refurbed units are a real value, if you need it now get it if you can wait there is always something better around the corner. But can can always pimp it ot on eBay, Mac's have good resale value. |

Never buy a 1st revision of anything that Apple (or any company for that matter) makes. Being on the bleeding edge of technology is always a gamble. I'd either buy one of the current, later revision MacBook Pro's (with the issues of the early revisions worked out) or wait until the new MacBook Pro's have been out for at least 6 months. BTW - I used to do phone tech support for Apple... -T |

Any recommendations for where I could get one of these refurbs. I'm in the UK but would happily ship from the US. Prices in the UK are sooo high! Cheers, Mark

Usually, they're on USA Apple Store's Website in a link that says "Looking for a great deal?" towards the bottom right-hand side of the page. Right now, they don't seem to have much more than refurbbed iPods. Just check the site often - great deals pop up every now and then, but they can go pretty quickly. Of course you'd need somebody in the US to make the purchase on your behalf, then then ship the MacBook to you in the UK (have them mark the package as "Gift" to avoid VAT too ).-T
