Pro Tools Problem with G5

hey everyone i have an annoying problem thats happening with pro tools LE...

sometimes when im playing back a mix im putting together the song will abruptly stop and there will be a message saying something about interupts being held off for too long and maybe i should increase my buffer size...also, it doesnt seem to matter if i have a huge mix playing or not. this has happened when ive been playing back like 3 tracks. and just so you know i am also usually running reason through rewire when pro tools is fired up.

well my buffer size is as high as it can be, and my G5 is 2Ghz w/ 2.5 gigs of ram...so whats the deal?

do you have an Mbox?

did you perform all the maintenance and troubleshooting things that digi recommends, like tossing prefs, databases, repairing dsik permissions?

you are not recording onto your system drive are you?

that's your issue...

buy an internal SATA drive. they are cheap, easy to install, and will give you LOTS of power.

get the seagate.

or if you MUST do FW (which would not be as good since your 002 is FW too) get a mercury elite.

but, really, there is only one FW BUS on your G5 and all the connectors are really a HUB...so, if you are pushing data in and out FW for the 002, the HD will just bog you down more.

thanks so much!

sooo...i can use the seagate instead of the FW one if im using my 002r, right?

more importantly, will pro tools work significantly better with the seagate as opposed to the FW?

it seems you did emphasize this in your posts by saying it gives "LOTS OF POWER" but i just want to clarify that the difference between the two is pretty big as far as performance.

yer welcome.

jah! use your new internal (non-system) drive. you will get better performace.

if you have the $$, get a FW drive to copy stuff onto to take to another studio, temporary back up, recording at another studio...etc....

look, you can use a FW drive as your PT record and mix drive. lots of people do. and it works well. i just think that the internal is better and cheaper. that's what i do here.

with the internal, you will get 48 tracks of 24/96k no problem (assuming you get one of the DV Toolkits)

with a FW, you have audio data and PT data going down the same pipe.. and Digi only 'supports' 24 tracks of 24/48k... which doesn't mean you won't get more, you will, but you can see the support difference.

makes a lot of sense. i feel stupid now, as i knew i would when this thread was good and done.

i think ill go for the 500 GB...the 750 has quite a jump in price!

about the digi, ill most likely dump it if this m-audio lightbridge ends up being m-powered compatible...
