Does ProTools crash much?

Hi

I am using Cubase SX 3 on a PC. It crashes all the time - at least once an hour, which is probably due to the fact that I built the PC :-)

However, I have found Cubase to be a little crash prone in the past on other computers.

I was curious as to how often ProTools systems crash, if at all?

Cheers!

Shaun

If you know all the fine details of Mac software ... and the proper way to run a Mac and PT .......... and if you keep all your plugs up to date, and DONT use HACKED plugs... PT can be very, very stable.

Maybe one crash a day. Maybe.

my cubase crashes maybe twice in 5 projects (album/demo productions) due to some plugin manufacturer.

protools HD is rockstable.. except when apple or digi release a new update.

if you start another pissingmatch now.. the thread will be closed faster as you can dfegad

When I tuned my PC 100% right way, my Pro Tools has crashed 0 times. Gotta love it.

I think you should investigate you computer/hardware/plugins before you start blaming Cubase. If your crashing once an hour somethings not right. I use Nuendo 3 all day long on big projects with lots of edits and plugins and rarely have a crash.

Good Luck

self built PC here as well....ZERO crashes because i have xp stripped down of all the bullshit, and everything useless and ram/cpu hogging that cant be removed is disabled.
The only errors i ever get are RAM related. worst case scenario, playback stops for a second or two. recording never gets interrupted.

from my own experience running PT LE for 3 years and PTHD for a few months now on a MAC (running latest versions most of the time):

If your computer is:
dedicated,
properly maintained,
no cracks,
no internet,
no widgets,
no spotlight,
Uber organisation of audio files, Midi and sessions in general
use of a good secondary hard drive to record and playback,
no unrelated to audio applications at all,

In more than 4 years i've had no more than 10 crashes (and that is MAX)...

On the other hand i've seen other setups used by people who are not too computer savvy (or don't really care) and I've seen some trouble there...

I guess if you apply these rules then you should be fine with most daws (under the condition that minimal cpu power requirements are met)

Obviously that has nothing to do with Cubase. If you have checked things like IRQs, the device manager etc, I would try running this http://www.memtest86.com/ for 24 hours and see how fit your memory is. If you have DDR2 memory, you might want to try Windows Memory Diagnostic.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Cubase is actually MORE stable on the PC than the Mac for me. Make sure you have the latest build of SX and the latest syncrosoft drivers. Check your RAM. Good luck

Take out the plugins out of the VST plugins folder and put them on the desktop and reboot the app.

A bad plug will DEF give you this prob and especially the freebies you can get online. Add one back at a tiem until you find the bad guy

I find Pro Tools to be stable. But I don't think switching from Cubase to Pro Tools is gonna keep it from crasing every hour. It doesn't sound like an application issue.

I agree.
If your having problems with Cubase, you'll have problems with PT's, Samplitude etc.

If your computer was built using cheap components, IE. bargain basement motherboard with a crappy chipset, cheapest soudncard etc., you'ree going to have problems.

I mean, it could be that the reason PT's MP crashes on ym computer is becasue of the drivers for the M-Audio Traveller.
When I run Nuendo, I use my Firebox.

It's not cubase.

I've been using cubase SX in a 7 day per week commercial studio for 3 years now. Multiple UAD-1 cards, MOTU PCI, high track counts, VST instruments etc. At any given time there might be 10+ projects on the go. There is no room for downtime, as I often have several different clients booked on any given day.

I rarely see ANY bad behaviour from cubase. As a matter of fact it doesn't actually crash at all. Maybe once a week I get a "serious error" message but the program keeps running. I simply save the project under a new name and restart cubase (not the PC).

The ONLY real problems I've had turned out to be a faulty MOTU PCI424 card which caused screaming digital distortion followed by spontaneous reboots. .
I replaced the PCI card and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

Having said that, you really do have to pick your PC components carefully. I spent quite a while researching mobos/graphics cards etc, and only used top quality PROVEN working combinations of hardware.

IMO, this is where Mac's have an advantage. Their weekness (hardware limitations) is their strength.

But...if you do it right, a PC/Cubase rig is a very solid system.
