| Here's the breakdown. I NEED to upgrade my studio next month. I currently have a terribly underpowered PC and I have vowed to never buy another one. I will be running an M-Audio ProjectMix with PT M-Powered 7. I have my sights on a G5 iMac, and naturally I'd like to get the new Intel Mac but I keep hearing about compatability issues. Plus, with the non-Intel version still being available brand new for cheaper I'm still considering getting one. Someone please steer me in the right direction! Thanks -LCD- |

| go for the intel mac. just make sure you get at least 2GB of RAM, doesn't have to be factory-installed.. there are still a number of plugins that are not Intel-ready but the majority are there or are getting there. the new macs are blazing fast; even an iMac would be suitable for most tasks on m-powered or LE i would think. are you looking to get a tower (Mac PRO) or desktop (iMac)? one thing to consider is that the iMac has no PCI-e slots (which you would need if you want to get the UAD plugins)... | Lives for gear | I'd go for the 20" Imac core 2 duo and upgrade the cpu to 2.33Ghz and 2g of ram... A hell of a machine with a great screen, plenty of power for M-powered stuff I'm sure. My 2cents, |

| Just do your homework on the model you're looking at. There have been systemic problems with some of Apple's new machines. |

| If you do a lot of work with samples, don't under-estimate how much RAM you'll need. 2gb is nothing if you're dealing with sample libraries like Vienna Symphonic (VSL). Personally, when upgrading my DAW I always go for whatever is the top of the range model at the time of purchase. I bought a G4 dual 1.42ghz/2gb/3x120gb when that was king of Macs and it's lasted more than 4 years. Time to upgrade for me now though. |

But it's only a matter of time, no argument to purchase a non-Intel Mac! The new Mac's just have more power, and everybody is going to enjoy that! | |
