Judging by the price and lack of any new info or specs from MOTU themselves, I'd say they're the same exact pres and converters from the 828mkII. I'm happy with my 828MkII (converters), but I'd go with the Mackie 800r for 8 extra preamps instead. |

Motu states: "The converters on the 828mkII are rated at 108db dynamic range. The converters on the 8Pre are rated at 112db dynamic range." Regards, Roger |

Link? I still couldn't find that info on their product page. And MOTU has taken to using vague terms like "gain range" because their actual specs (like actual preamp gain) are quite low compared to their competitors. I would buy MOTU for their firewire capabilities because the converters sound good and the drivers are rock solid (for mac), but the preamps are basic, entry-level for sure. |

I guess for under $600 (street) it's a good deal. Better than the 828mkII in that it has more optical inputs/outputs at higher sample rates, which would support a preamp/converter "expansion" later on (the 828MKII only can accept 4 channels of 96khz optical). If you didn't need the 828mkII front panel mixing/buss capabilities (for road gigs), then I'd recommend this to friends as a DAW front end... I still see no real info or stats that mentions an improvement on the preamps themselves. MOTU aren't talking them up beyond "you get more of them." Generally, when a company makes improvements to a product, it's all over the ads and product literature. |
