I don't mean chassis. I mean PCIe to PCI cable. Like a XLR to TRS but for the computer(if this exists, or it's possible). Anyone feel free to inform on this, or explain why it may, or may not be possible at all.

PCIe Computer to PCI Expansion Chassis. Can this work, or is it technically impossible. If so do you think that Digidesign will test it for working with Pro Tools|HD? I would'nt want to have to shell out another $1K to purchase an expansion chassis if a cable will to the job.

I think he means a kind of "genere changer" which allows to connect a PCI card into a PCI-e slot. Am i right?

If is this what you mean, here at gearslutz was said not to be compatible with PT HD, but i cant assure you as i haven't checked by myself.

Hope to help,

Don't know about compatibility though.

simply the slots work differently (PCI being parallel and PCIe being serial) so its not possible to simple have an adapter cable as the over simplified example of an XLR-TRS.

as robi mention there are some simple cards but dont know if they work with TDM cards, its unlikley that digidesign will ever test them.
on top of that you may be trouble egtting the things in your case, as they ass significant height to a card you cant simply slot them in unless you lower the mobother board and i dont think any case will have enough free space to mount the mobo that low.

easiest solution is dont buy a computer without PCI slots

Cool

All,

According to 'Jill' at Magma a simple solution is to purchase the following:

Magma - PEHIFX1

which retails for $299.00.

It is supposedly a PCIe host card to be installed into your computer that connects up to the the same cable/multipin connector that goes between your computer's standard PCI host card, & PCI expansion chassis. 'Jill' says that you can hook this up to a non-64bit chassis(in my case a 13slot expansion chassis), & it will work just fine. But, call Magma at 800.285.8990 to verify this, and this especially for your particular application.

Do you think this would work when trying to make a PTHD3 PCI work in a Mac Pro?

PCI Express to PCI Expansion Box - PC & Macintosh
that box wouldnt be long enough for TDM cards anyway

Rob,

When/if you try this, I'd like to know how well it works. I would be using this card with a Mac Pro running PTHD, and UAD PCI cards. What system are you tempted to try this with?

The PCIe card Rob mentioned is only 300 bucks, but yes, Magma's PCIe to PCIe chassis is exorbitantly pricey. My thoughts are that Magma believes it has the industry by the balls, that they are the defacto standard for this technology, and they know it. However, in this thread there's at least 1 other company with a similar offering (although I'd never use a chassis that needs a wall wart!).

I just might try the Magma PCIe card with an older expansion chassis. If it doesn't work, I can basically recoup my investment in the 2nd hand chassis, and hopefully just return the card.

The only things I'm doubtful about would be the card's driver compatibility with both PTHD and OSX... especially with Leopard fresh out on the street.

Here's a thread from the UA forum detailing what it takes to make the card mentioned above work with an older expansion chassis:

UAD Forums :: View topic - Magma?

A pair of $300 cards and a $99 cable to make them all play nice together, assuming you already have an older Magma chassis that uses the flat cable.

Still cheaper than buying a new Magma PCI chassis and a $300 card....

Friggin' circus!
