Thread Starter | Simple Universal MIDI Editor/Librarian for Mac?
I have a ProTools HD2 system w/192 I/O on a Mac G4 867. I am running ProTools 5.3.1 and Mac OS 9.2.2. I have a few outboard effects units: Lexicon PCM 91, Lexicon LXP 15, TC Electronics TC-M3000. Is there a simple universal MIDI editor/librarian progam available that I can load on the Mac, for interfacing with these outboard units at the computer monitor? I have seen several of these programs for PC's, but I haven't seen one that will work on a Mac (and hopefully with ProTools). Thanks! Mike |

Yes, but: Emagic SoundDiver: I went to the Emagic website and looked at the list of supported pieces of equipment. Of the gear I have, -Kurzweil K2600 synth -Axon AX-100 guitar synth -Lexicon LXR-15 -Lexicon PMC91 -TC Electronics M3000, they list exactly one of these as supported. All have been produced for at least 1-2 years. I emailed Emagic to ask why. The email came back because "inbox is full". I have never worked with Emagic, but at first glance they appear to me to be out to lunch. MOTU Unisyn: This is a FreeMIDI software package, while ProTools is OMS. I don't think these will work together (or at least not w/o a lot of effort). If I am right on this, then this is not an option. So, I'm still not sure who provides what I need. Thanks for the suggestions! Mike |

I tried to use a FreeMIDI sequencer with PT when I bought a Yamaha MU10 (it came in the package), I was really hopeful but it just didn't work out. That was seven years ago though but I've never tried since. I bought Logic Platinum, I'm still using 3.5. I use it mostly for generating scores or conductor templates to export to PT for demos. I don't think they're out to lunch, just very busy. You can download your system exclusive data and name the patches and functions as you like. You would have to do this once for each unsupported device and then as you make new patches you would have to name them anyway. emagic is owned by Apple and collaborates very closely with DD.

Go Soundiver. I'm a little unsure of what you're trying to saying here : Quote:

here's another vote for sound diver, I use it to control all my midi stuff and it works great, very stable and efficient, and emagic updates regularly unlike motu... there is a universal module to control unsupported devices |

With SoundDiver, can I adjust variables on, for example, the Lexicon PCM 91 while a session is open in ProTools, so I can hear the effect of the changes in real time? My comment regarding Emagic was that I am just surprised that only one of my devices is shown in their list of supported devices: http://www.emagic.de/products/st/sd/models.php?lang=EN They show: -PCM 90, but not PCM 91 -Kurzweil K2500, but not K2600 -The TC M5000, but not the M3000 -No Axon device They either have not added support for new devices in the last year or two, or they aren't updating the list on their website. Thanks for the help, Mike |

Kent, With the Universal Module in SoundDiver, can I change reverb parameters on, for example, the Lexicon PCM 91, while ProTools is open and listen to the changes in real time as I play a song? This is of course what I do now by turning the knobs on the PCM 91 as I play a song back. Thanks, Mike |

Sound Diver would be the way to go I think, I do know the K2600 is fully supported in the latest version 3, and I also do know that the list of supported devices on the web site is not all that up to date, there is a very active yahoo group for Diver users. You could ask there about some of the others. I have version 2. bla bla, never use it as it is slower than I am at loading all the stuff up or doing midi control in a sequencer, the graphics are nice, but never did more than look pretty, I tend to make Logic enviorments and just use them for MIDI control stuff. Still I should use it to archive stuff along with my current system of sysex files, wouldn't hurt. Been meaning to give it a try again though, perhaps one day. |
