How long can a DVI cable go before I need a repeater?

I'm about to purchase a 23"Apple monitor. My question is how long can the dvi cable be, before I need to buy a belking repeater?

Many thanks.

DVI-D copper cable is somewhere around 1000', DVD-D w/ DDC signal for HDTV (DVD-D Fiber optic cable) is somewhere around 300'
Right now I'm using both a 100; unit and a 50' unit. Working great. I have an extra 100' (have to meaasure to verify length), so PM me if you need something that long, or look online, I think a company called Orphit from Korea manufacturs these cables for some companies in the US

5m. That would be around 15 feet if i´m not mistaken. A repeater can usually drive 10m betrween the computer and the repeater and an additional 5m after the repeater to the display.
You can find 8 or 10m DVI cables and try if they work with your display and graphics card, but i think this is highly unlikely to happen.

considering I've used stnd graphics cards both on the G4 and G5 systems that I have used/am using and running 50' and 100' cables, it's not too unlikely that you don't need a repeater. Just order the proper sex on the end of the cable - I screwed that one up and got both male ends on the last 2 cables I installed

If you get a fiber DVI cable you can go very, very long, but it'll cost you! Maximum distance seems to be 330 feet, but such a cable costs $1999 here for instance.

so what would one need to run 50' from a dvi output on a G5?

You'd hit the max distance on a copper DVI cable. You can get one from Gefen (link posted above) - the only thing I'd ever buy from that company again (all my extension stuff and boxes have had intermittant experiences).
If you need to go longer than 50ft, send me a PM, as I've said I have a fiber cable and I believe it's 100'

I just got a 20m cable from Lindy and it works great connecting my G5 Mac to a Dell
24" monitor via DVI at 1920x1200. It's their single DVI-D "superlong" cable.
www.lindy-usa.com They are very helpful on the phone as well.

just stumbled on this old thread, and figured I'd charm in with some info I found from this reading this thread.. (crazy how the world goes around)

From lindy-usa.com - "optimised cable material that allows longer cable distances than the 7.5m maximum recommendation laid down by the DDWG (Digital Display Working Group)." LINK > Digital Display Working Group
