HELP! Having trouble importing Quicktimes into Pro Tools 6.4.1 Mix...

I have Pro Tools 6.4.1 Mix Plus TDM on Mac G4 1gig dual with OS X v10.3.8.
Ram is maxed out at 2 gigs.
Is is a picky PT thing, a codex thing or what?
Video guy needs to know how to get me Quicktimes that will import.
Unfortunately upgrading my OS is not an option.
What to do?
Thanks in advance for swift respons.

Here's th instructions I wrote up for the guys at Hit many years ago. It's written very simple so nobody would F things up. Hope this helps. Quicktime is different now, clips are longer, but it was no problem if you had multiple clips. Leave out any option you don't need

Capturing Video and adding Window Burn

1. Video output of BVU 3/4” to Video in of USD ( Do not confuse with Video ref in)
2. Timecode out of BVU to LTC In on USD.
3. Video out of USD goes to Video in on the Canopus ADC100
4. Make sure that the Canopus is connected via FireWire to the Mac and that it is selected for Analog in. Do so by holding/pressing the toggle button on the front of the unit
5. Open iMovie- toggle tab in lower left to the camera on (if everything is setup up correctly it should say camera connected)
6. Click import. Video with the appropriate window burn Time Code should appear.
7. If you want to change the position of the window burn or its color (open ProTools then create a session. Open your session setup window and click on USD setup. Click the box labeled window burn. You now have control over windown burn parameters.
8. Output of the Canopus thru a RCA to BNC cable can feed your Monitor via a patch in the machine room
9. It’s a good idea to view it on the display in the control room to check if you’re able to see the timecode clearly, given it will be your visual cue when aligning in ProTools.

Exporting to QuickTime

iMovie captures in 9 1/2 minutes clips and the will create a new clip. Don’t panic if your clip is longer than that, it will automatically create a new clip without any interruption.

Once you’re ready to export your session drag all your clips to the timeline in iMovie (If you shift click and select all the individual clips it and drag them to the timeline it will place them in the order they were captured)

After you have made any changes or edits you are ready to export. Select all the clips in the timeline and go to file to choose export. In the export tab choose To QuickTime Formats: choose Expert settings. Click export the click soptions

Size settings will appear. 320/240 seems to usually works just fine because you will be viewing on a large external monitor anyways.

Settings- Compression settings DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (It’s critical that this is selected because ProTools and the Canopus can’t render any other format fast enough to stream out the FireWire port) Frames should be 29.97 given that it’s digital video.)

Click ok and leave if it’s a long video because it’s going to take a while

Hmmm... a bit complicated...

I just need to tell this guy the type of Quicktime file that will import into my current PT.
Does he need to do it on a Mac with OS X v10.3.8, or is it something else?

What version of Quicktime do you have installed on your machine? PT v6.4.1 doesn't like the newer stuff.

It's probably a codec thing...

If you intend to use it on a tv monitor with a Canopus you'd have to record/convert the Quicktime to DV25, if that's not the case you can also import MPEG4's. But I assume that any format for which a codec is installed in the Quicktime Library should work.

Try opening the clips with Quicktime first, does that work? Then you can also look into the movie properties what codec is used.

If you've got Quicktime Pro you can also convert the files yourself to MPEG4 or DV.

I'll check the mix systems when I get to work tomorrow (brought them to work to test before selling them sometime). If I don't respond, it means I forgot, so PM me to remind me.

Those versions of Quicktime should work fine. Did you ever get this sorted out?

Oops. I thought the guy having the problem asked what version QT worked on my PT rigs. We haven't heard back from the original poster so I guess we can assume he got it figured out or has moved on.
