it's not the notebook that causes the problem of heat (maybe additionaly), it's the thing that divides the anode from the cathode. if it is contaminated with small particles, the anode starts to make a short with the cathode ==> heat==> fire.

additionally, users wanna have more and more batterytime, so they have to pack more material in the Lithium-Ion-battery.

cheers

Sony must be hating life at the moment, that's for sure.

Dell and Apple were both using Sony notebook batteries and they are the first to recall.

I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing from other manufacturers in the near future.

Here's the details on Apple's recall.

This recall primarily has to do with G4 iBooks and PowerBooks.

hmm...My 12" iBook battery was actually exchanged over a year ago. Just a few months after I bought it the hard drive failed and I had to send to iBook into Apple and while they had it they switched the battery. I never really knew why though. I checked out my serial just in case and I'm good. Not very often that I am actually ahead of the game. :)

Dell used a particular Sony battery that was the issue. Apple stated that they used a different battery than the Dells.

"Apple has determined that certain lithium-ion batteries containing cells manufactured by Sony Corporation of Japan pose a safety risk that may result in overheating under rare circumstances.

The affected batteries were sold worldwide from October 2003 through August 2006 for use with the following notebook computers: 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4 and 15-inch PowerBook G4."

I think they use the same type of battery in RC electric planes,
what has happened is people have crashed thier planes ,
put thier plane carcus in the car and minutes latter thier
cars up in flames. I guess if you hit those batteries it can
screw stuff up inside the batterey and start a nice little fire.

It's not just for the Powerbook G4's. My Intel MacBook Pro's battery was in that recall as well.

Thanx for this forum. I would have never known.

I've had problems with the battery since we've had it.

Has anyone gotten their replacement battery yet? I filled out the form > 6 weeks ago, and haven't gotten anything yet.
