| Gear addict | Digital Performer is bad with an external FW drive?!
hey all...just seeing if anyone else had this happen to them in DP... I am using an Oxford bridge external FW drive with my DP, the very same drive I alwys used to use with Pro Tools. I recently had a session where I was tracking about 12 drums mics, plus about 6 more instrument tracks. Both the playback and record buffers would "red-out" so fast I couldnt get anything done. with an anxious and growingly weary band tapping their feet waiting for me to sort this crap out...it wasnt pretty. Ive done more tracks in PT with no issues, and I know PT really urges one to record to external FW or dedicated drive. in desperation, I switched to my internal system drive, and everything was fine. i dont want to record to that drive, but its working fine. Does DP not like going to external drives? Im almost certain my FW drive is fast enough... any thoughts?

I've had a similiar thing happen with a Firewire drive before. Here's how I fixed it. Make a folder on your internal drive called fwbackup (or whatever) and copy everything from your fw drive into that folder. Then, format your fw drive. Copy all the files back and there will be 0 fragmentation and the drive should work without issue.

I haven't noticed that kind of problem with DP. I use both DP and PT and they both seem to have about the same external firewire drive performance.

interesting. well, im sure the FW drive is fragmented like all hell. i should just get a new drive and pop it in the enclosure. i dont have enough space on my system drive to temporarily hold the FW contents. BTW--i used to use an 002R with 8 extra ADAT channels for my pro tools rig. now im using a MOTU 24 i/o with the 424 PCI FW card. when it was crashing, I had about 17-18 channels going in, with just one stereo channel coming out. nothing extensive at all, really... Ill try the new HD thing. ill hit up new egg.... |
