G5 Mac Audio Setup utility

This question is regarding the audio setup utility in the G5.

From the audio input, does anyone knows how to change "line-in" to "digital-in"? For some reason, it has only one selection from the menu (line-in). I want to use the digital I/O toslink input. Line-out is OK and it's set at digital out.

Thanks,
Al

From your dock or Applications Folder,
Open System Preferences/Sound

You'll see Sound Effects- Output and Input and via what port.

Line Out
Digital Out
Aggregate Device

I done this and I can see the signal from sound preference, but Logic doesn't see it.

If you go to spotlight and input audio midi setup, this utility don't let me select digital-in.

mmm that is strange. which i/o card are you using? (it depends on the drivers, the fireface does show me the spdif in, as well as all other options, in the Audio Midi setup)
or are you using the internal toslink? that should show up choosing the option "built in audio" and also in the sound prefs as FFTT pointed out. I cannot test that however, because I have a G4 without the standard toslink in.

I still can't explain exactly how to get sound out of Logic.
I was completely lost for weeks, seeing audio in, but not getting anything out.

Somewhere in these forums there's a Logic Set-Up Guide or a seasoned user
that can walk you through the audio set-up.

It's simple, but tricky if you don't know what window to work in.

Best to ask someone with more Logic experience than me.

Hey BigAl,

I'm assuming you are talking about the built-in inputs here. Your line-in should automatically redirect to digital as soon as you plug-in a valid digital source. Try it out. Also, what exact computer are youusing and with what OS build, as that will determine the specific behavior. As a sanity check, unplug any analog line in or headphones (front and back) just to be sure. Let me know.

In Logic, Built In Input might refer to both analog and digital, depending on which version of Logic.

Hope that helps.
Eric

This is true, but it's not happening with me.

I am using OS X10.4.7 on a Dual G5 and I just updated to Logic 7.2.2. It's trying to work now, but the recording is funky. I'm almost there.

Thanks,
Al

OK. That's the brand new logic update, some funky issues with the way it sees built-in Ins and Outs. I can get back to you on a workaround. You'll probably want to end up making an aggregate device in Audio Midi Setup (AMS). More on that later.

For now, just try to get AMS to see S/PDIF in.
