Seagate 7200.10 "perpendicular" hard drive?

Anybody have anything to say about these drives? I was just about to put together a new external firewire hard drive (probably in an OWC Mercury Elite Pro case) and these seem to be a good option. A 320GB 7200.10 w/ 16MB cache is around $100 from newegg, so if they work great, or at least if their speed benefits can still be noticed through FW400 when doing audio work, then it seems silly not to get one.
Thanks.
P.S. I really need to maximize my firewire capabilities because both of my computers (ibook and imac) only have one firewire bus (and I use a Firepod), so my assumption is that making sure my hard drive doesn't bring it down would be ideal.

Not sure about the "perpendicular" drive but using a Seagate FW external drive here(9Y7685-560 power button in front) and it's driving me crazy. It will go to sleep if it sits idle for a few minutes no matter how you have your energy saver setup- I am told by Seagate that this cannot be disabled. LAME!! Now will be used as a shuttle drive only.

Don't get me wrong- I love Seagate drives and use the int. Barracudas exclusively in my PT setup. My favorite external FW setup is a Wiebetech (www.wiebetech.com) empty "Toughtech" enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda inside. Noisless and reliable. Very easy to swap drives in and out. Good luck!

I'd stay away for a bit...

CAUTION
We must alert you to something before you run out and buy the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA drive. We've had reports from expert sources that there can be problems with booting and mounting. Plus, Seagate has reportedly made changes to the hardware and firmware on the drive for their most recent manufacturing run -- which may or may not address the issues mentioned above. If you plan to buy one or more of these drives, we recommend you use a reputable dealer who takes returns without charging restocking fees in case it doesn't perform to your satisfaction.

Yeah, I saw that warning. But it was posted a month and a half ago and was probably already based on outdated revisions/information. I appreciate the concern, though. I was hoping some slutz would have personal experience to share. I've seen that some of you have the drives installed internally, so share some info, eh?

In the world of firmware revision, I don't think a month or so is very long... But OWC has stellar customer service. They'll take care of you if you have issues.

i've got one of those drives in a vantec NAS enclosure, so not sure about the speed increase compared to a standard drive, but its working very well.

I'm using 4 of the 750GBs in a RAID 5 config for a data redundant, 2TB Volume.

Running great so far.

Seagate 9Y7685-560 External HD

I've had a Seagate 9Y7685-560 External HD drive (1 x USB and 2 x F/W
ports ) for about two years. I use it to back up data from two PCs, one
very old, so half this HD was formatted FAT32 and the other half in NTFS.
It's powered by an external 12VDC/3A PSU. I use it sporadically, like once
a month, but there have been times I've left it turned on for over a
month. I've never had a any problems at all. When used in any way
besides transferring files, like running an app or something, the access
seems a tad slow. It's quiet, reliable. When I got this on sale at Fry's the
man in front of me said he was buying his second one because he liked
his first, as I ended liking mine. If it weren't that you can get Seagate
500 GB SATA HDs for <$100, I'd gladly buy another one. Besides needing
an external brick supply, it lies flat, not vertically, with an approximate 6" x
7" print, so it may not be suitable for portability.

Ignore that warning.

aside from a minor glitch with the 750G (lasted about 2-3 weeks) the seagate perpendicular drive have been steller.

We have about 50 750GB Seagates and none have failed... we have 2 Maxtors and they both failed within the first 2 weeks we had them. The Western Digital drives we use have also been good quality.

checked my email and saw the same drive on sale...
Good company though bought all my drives for my video editing PC from them have worked flawlessly..using WD SATAs. Have all Maxtors in my G4 without any issues
and they've been in there for 4 years. I am upgrading soon, and backup everything
constantly.
