Sonalksis SV-315 or Waves Renaissance Compressor (not the RenVox unless you're into rap IMO).

I actually sometimes use both in a combo: one slow and deep sorta like bootstrapping, one fast and in the top dynamics.

I also use gentle compression during recording, a nice tube one or smooth solid state.

Spreading out gentle compression over several units can be a great idea, but sometimes you just want to keep it as simple as possible.
